Eventually we got all the utilities running at the same time. That's when Hyundai tried to repossess my wheels. I saved enough money for the deposit and after a series of "walk away" negotiations, I got it. It has close to $1000 worth of stereo equipment, including an equaliser and a power booster. Even at minimum volume it makes the windows shake.

But I was behind in the payments. One night the repo guy showed up at the door about 6pm.

He said, "Mr Willems, I'm from Blah Blah Blah Motors. I've come to get your car. You haven't made a payment in three months. Unless you can give me $500 right now, the car's going with me."
I said, "Five hundred dollars? Who keeps that kind of cash on them?"
He said, "Can't you write me a cheque?"
"A cheque? Shit...yeah, I can write you a cheque! I thought you needed money."

So I wrote him a bad cheque and hid the car in a friend's garage until I got caught up on my payments. I couldn't believe he took the cheque. I was tempted to pay the whole thing off right there. Maybe even say, "Tell you what, here's $500 extra. Go get your wife something nice."

I'm gonna be a politician when I grow up.
