Well, what can be said but as if losing a Grand Final wasn't a big enough
slap in the face in itself, it now looks almost certain that the Fat
Fellas are
going to lose one of their first and finest inaugural players in
Kev Leong.
Although there has been no official statement from Kev
Leong himself, sources
close to the 3-time championship point guard say that he is as good
as gone,
leaving a huge gap in the Fat Fellas backcourt to fill.
There are many rumours floating around specualting as
to why Leong has
suddenly decided to walk away from the Fat Fellas in what many see
as their hour
of need.
Some sources close to the team believe that there was
a conflict of intrest
in regards to the way the team was being steered as well as being disgruntled
with a certain player(s) on the team and his court time allocation.
Many
spectators and certainly some of his team mates where shocked and upset
with the
benching of Leong in the last five minutes of the Grand Final, where
many felt
he should have been on the court to lead the team espicially since
there was no
true point guard on the floor at that time.
However, until an official statement is released by Leong
himself, this
specualtion is without any real substance, but either way it seems
almost
inevitable that his departure is certain.
So where does this leave the Fat Fellas organisation??
Well there is no doubt
that this is the lowest the team has ever been since it's introduction
to the
league. The loss to the Blades in the Grand Final, a team that they
seemingly
eliminated in the first round of the finals, has no doubt dropped a
few heads of
the players who could not continue the fine winning tradition associated
with
the Fat Fellas organisation. And now with the departure of Leong this
will
certainly be the start of a new era for the Fat Fellas.
However, without there consistent and energetic
floor leader on the court,
it is easy to understand why many people will be aprehensive as to
the success
of the Fat Fellas this coming season.
This will truly test the character of many of the players
on the team and
perhaps exploit how important Kev Leong is, or should I say was to
this
organisation.
So with this we now enter a new era and say goodbye to
one of the most gifted
players to grace the court, and send a tribute to him with this final
recap on
the basketball career of one Kevin Win Leong.
The GBL days
It was here where Kev Leong first honed his skills for
the game. As a goliath
compared to the other players, Leong unleashed more than a few monstorous
dunks
during his early days and torn down more than a few hoops to the bemusement
of
Mr Spagnolo who effortlessly tried to make an unbreakable rim with
no success.
During this time, Leong would immediatly show uncanny
talent in all facets of
the game, and show many why he had a bright future ahead of him.
The Willetton days
The early Willetton days where the first chance the world
had to see the
talents of Leong.
He constantly bemused other teams with his inivative dribbling
and lay ups as
well as enjoying alot of success along the way.
However, the once Goliath Leong of the Bullets would
find after a few years
that his role would change to David in light of his lack of growth
since the age
12, but this would not hold him back as he still continued to leave
teams and
fans in awe and speechless ('cept his Dad who could be heard on finals
days
cheering GGGGGOOOOO KKKKKEEEEVVVVIIIIINNNN with his heavy accent
which could be
heard from a couple of suburbs over) with his unique and crazy moves.
The Days of 21
This would mark a change of the times as Kev finally acquired
the holy grail,
in his eyes, which had alluded him for so long...... a basketball hoop
of his
own.
It would be here that the boys of the street would become
men as games of 21,
31, 41, and so forth would stretch on for many summer days and just
as many
nights. Blood flowing was a constant feature of these times with many
scars and
even more bruises being laid...... all part of the good times shared
by all.
Leong would also show his great mind at work with the
invention of some all
time classics such as blind fold basketball which needless to say was
always
amusing in one way or another.
The Cockburn days
It was here where Leong would hook up with long term school
friends and stars
in thier own respect, Eamer and Sheppard and together terrorise the
Junior State
League competition.
On a team where many ego's more than exceeded Leong's
height, he would still
manage to shine and help lead Cockburn to many fine days.
The Fat Fella days
Thus as the years passed on and ravaged his once athletic
frame, Leong
decided to uptake a new challenge and re-unite with now obese former
Bullets
team mates Delides and Woolfrey and establish the Fat Fellas.
Along this path he would be joined by childhood friends
Eamer, Spagnolo and
Sheppard and together along with Watton and O'Connell they would dominate
the C
division of Willetton.
The season that just past would be argued as the best
season of his Fat Fella
career. With the leaving of Eamer and the 1001 injuries of Spagnolo,
Leong would
show some of the old school tricks that he used to make with relative
ease in
his younger days....however we may now never see him do them again.
So we now bid him farewell from the game he embrassed and which embrassed
him
back and hope in light of all the rumours that have been circulated
that
hopefully they have not been true and that this has just been a big
waste of my
time..........
