This page is being used to track any feedback on the new rules for outdoor
volleyball
- Have you ever played on a tournament that used the new short court?
- What do you think of using a shorter court for doubles and triples
(Court is 16 meters x 8 meters vs 18 meters x 9
meters or
52' 6" x 26' 3" vs 59' x 29' 6") ?
- USAV says that the short court is only for Open level. AVPNext also
says that the rule should apply only to Pros or Semi-Pros. After that
it is up to the tournament director if they use the new rules or the
traditional rules. Should the use of the short court and other new
rules
apply to the lower levels?
- What do you think of the Net serve for anything below sixes (2s, 3s, etc)
?
- What do you think of using Rally Score for anything below sixes (2s, 3s,
etc) ?
- I think last year the AVP experimented with this rule for Rally score.
When a team
gets to game point the losing / receiving team gets one last chance to score
a Rally
Point. If they win the point then the scoring switches to the
traditional / Sideout
scoring for the rest of the game. I.E. You must serve to win the
game! This should
allow the losing team a better chance to make a comeback. What do you
think
of this rule adjustment if you are forced to play Rally Scoring?
- What level do you normally play?
- I was thinking of adding the information on if a tournament uses the new
rules
to my web site and the list that I email out, most likely in the info
section for each
tournament. Would this info be useful to you?

Comments: Opposed to it, would play only if forced to
Prefer large courts which levels the playing field for shorter, quicker players who like to
make shots, versus power, which they cannot ever compete with
It's a definite disadvantage for the shorter players and I think in the end,
it will lead to more dinking
and rolls and fewer power shots. Volleyball is already starting to
become like basketball. That is, if
you're not 6' tall, then you might as well forget playing at least at the
college level and beyond. We
don't need anything else that will aid in benefiting the taller players.

Comments: There
must have been a reason for it at the higher levels and I'm guessing that
the reason was all
about "precision". With a shorter court, there's less
room for error and
in the end it is more challenging. The
better and bigger the player, the more precise they can be in their talents.
So, no, I do not believe that the short
court should be used at the lower levels.
No, the short court in meant for heavy hitter who can also place
there shot's on the court with precision
and accuracy. It would make the lower level game boring and
frustrating for those playing it.

Don't really care either way. On one side it takes all the controversy or oversight required to
address close-call Let serves, yet it allows for sloppier play because the trajectory
of a let ball is hard to read and results in unintentional achievement of points where they were not intended or otherwise earned.
The Let serve does not show any skill. Sure, a
player may practice serving very tight to the net, but it's
all about luck when it actually hits the net just right and rolls over to
the other side. It's not like teaching
a player to serve a particular position...A player can become precise enough
to serve a position without having to rely on luck. The let serve is
basically a "mistake" made by the server and i don't feel like we
should play off of mistakes.

Comments: Only if no lights for later and long pool times should Rally be
used
I
HATE rally scoring – it has little to no place in volleyball, indoor or
outdoor (should I clarify further?) – it makes
comebacks rare if not impossible – I like the fact that, with regular
scoring, the game is never over
It keeps time between games more consistent but forces me to back down on the
aggressiveness of my serves to not lose points from my serves. I like the old scoring a bit more for that reason.
For me this is the big one- I HATE RALLY. Many people have said that
they are used to it because of
indoors- and I am also but that does not mean I think it has any place in
the outdoor game. I think it
turns a possible 2 hour excellent fight between two great teams into a win
for a team that may have
earned only two points. It takes away from the excitement of the long
games as well as the great
come backs. NOT IN FAVOR OF THE RALLY... I think it changes the game
too much. Fighting for
each point- and knowing each of the countable 15 points was key to winning a
tight game.
We have to go back and remember what rally score was initially intended
for...It was to improve spectator
interest in the sport. At the Olympic, college, or pro levels, this
seems okay because of the televised
matches. Rally scoring seems to hold people's interest more.
However, at the lower outdoor levels, I
don't see a need for it. There's not many spectators watching except
for the other players. The great
thing about a well matched-up team is that one game can last an hour with
regular score. People play
outdoor tournaments because they love the game of volleyball and want to use
their skills...not try to get
off the court as soon as possible.
