The Rings
The rings are an event only for men in gymnastics. It consists of a set of two rings, whch are 8 1/2 feet from the ground, and the cables that hold the rings are connected usually to the ceiling, or at least 18 feet from the floor. The rings are made out of wood with laminated cover, or fiberglass, and they are suspended from long nylon or leather straps. The height of the rings is important so that the gymnast can dismount off the rings safely, without hitting them on the way down.
A routine for the rings is composed of swing elements, handstands, and hanging elements. The hanging elements show the strength of the gymnast on the rings.
This event is also called "still rings" because the rings are not supposed to be swinging all over the place. Instead, they should be in relatively the same position, with the exceptions of when the gymnast is doing a skill.
