My uncle, Merrill Combs, knew Billy very well.
They played together on the 1948 Oakland Oaks and
were lifelong friends. Here's a story about Billy
that showed his sensitive side. Merrill was just
short of 10 years in professional baseball that
was required to give him his pension and benefits
that were available to retired ballplayers. Billy
knew about this problem and hired him as infield
coach when he was manager of the Texas Rangers. I
was very fortunate to have met Billy on a few

My father graduated from Berkeley High School in 1939 and I suppose Billy Martin was 11 then. My dad did have a recollection of Billy.
My dad played first base at Berkeley High School and they went over to play UC Berkeley, most likely in 1939 and won the college baseball team.

I am very glad to have found this site. I unfortunately was never able to see Billy play or manage. I, however, am in the process of reading every book ever written about him.
Billy is definitely one of the best managers ever, it is a shame that we was so misunderstood .
