Dusty's Mask Art

I happen to be a hockey fan as well as an art fan. That's why I find the art on goalie helmets so appealing. Damian happened to have at least 5 different helmets throughout his NHL career. He had two at Toronto, two in Ottawa and his current one with Atlanta.

The design of his helmets have almost been essentially the same, varying little in motif. The one featured here is one of his first from Toronto. If one looks closely, they will notice the maple leafs along with these puffy cloud sort of things. Not really that intimidating.

The next design is more interesting. Two maple leafs blaze up the sides of Rhodes' head. On the chin (not visible) is a small blue maple leaf. This design was to become the basis of his latter mask at Ottawa. All objects are boldly outlined with white on a blue field. Damian looks like he's more ready to back up Potvin in this mask than the previous.

This third mask is Damian's first at Ottawa. The words "The Net" are on the forehead, surrounded by a spiders web. The Ottawa logo is on the chin, sort of the same as the maple leaf logo being on the chin of his other helmet. With Damian's masks, it is plain to see he keeps some of the elements or ideas the same. I am not sure if I like the black on white. If it was me choosing the design, I'd go for an all black field with some more webbing.

This mask is probably my favourite because it is more of a personal piece of art for Damian. You will notice that the maple leaves on the side of his helmet almost mirror those of his mask at Toronto save the fact they are red instead of blue. The Peace Tower of Canada's parliament buildings is painted on the forehead. The crest on the chin bears the initials of Damian's father. On the back piece, the nickname "Dusty" is painted on.

I still have to find a good picture of Damian's Thrashers mask. But if you look at some of the pictures of him with Atlanta, you'll see that there's a big old bird's head on the top of the helmet. I've seen this done with eagles, bluejays etc. Thus concludes my critique of Dusty's masks. Hope you enjoyed. Goodnight!
