You don't have to be in the lead. It is probably best to ride at the rear, so we don't leave anyone behind. On demanding rides it's also a good idea to wait at the crest of major hills, giving everyone a chance to catch-up. If riders lag or some shoot ahead, that's okay. We're riding for recreation, and we should let everyone ride at their own pace. You, as the ride leader, are basically responsible to account for all riders throughout the ride.
