Crime Prevention
One cannot really say that he dont have to think of these security measures, he dont have enemies or he is a good person...there are only kind of people here on earth...if you are not good then you are bad. Let us always be reminded that the favorite victim of a criminal are those who unaware.
An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure. A trite saying but which is still very applicable. It's so trite that we tend to forget about it entirely. Crime can be prevented if we follow some very common sense.
a) Home Security
There are three layers of security we should develop. The first layer is the border of the public property and the access to our property. The second layer is the space from layer one to the skin of our home including the door. The third layer is the space between your front door and your bedroom.
The following tips are recommended to secure our home:
i. Provide a Dog in your backyard.
ii. A fence must be installed at the border of the property.(First layer)
iii. Well lighted area in your backyard.
iv. On the radio when no one is around before leaving.
v. Replace a plywood door into a solid one.
vi. Reliable door locks and keep it close all the time.
vii. Trim high plants in your backyard, the intruder might use it as
concealment.
viii. Build a see through fence for easy visibility outside your border.
ix. Be aware of suspicious people before leaving and arriving at your
home.
x. Provide peepholes at the gate as well as the door of your house.
xi. Make an emergency exit
xii. Provide a hidden weapon in every door you have.
b) Car security
i. Car key must be separated from other keys for easy pick up in case of emergency.
ii. Never leave any valuable things inside your car when parking for longer periods.
iii. Car must be in good condition always to avoid breakdown in dangerous streets.
iv. Always leave half car length distance from cars infront while parking for easy pull out.
v. Doors must be lock always while on mobile.
vi. While waiting for somebody, use rear and side mirrors to monitor suspicious persons at the back of the car. likewise in the same
vii. manner , to monitor suspicious vehicle following your way while on mobile.
viii. Install an Anti-theft alarm device and secret ignition switch to prevent being carnap.
ix. Know the capability of your car and learn how to use it well especially when you need it most.
x. If someone is after you, run with your car, if the car cannot run, leave the car and defend yourself. Sometimes a car can be use as weapon.
c) When walking on streets
i. Dress to blend, not stand out
ii. No displays of affluence.
iii. Divide up money on your person; keep some readily available Choose purses that break away ( don't carry anything you don't want to lose in your purse.
iv. Be conscious and suspicious of people at the back while walking.
v. Don't talk to strangers to ask or answer questions.
vi. Act like you belong on the street and are familiar with the area.
vii. Keep your hands free as much as posible, chest high when in crowd or anticipaqting trouble.
viii. Trust your gut instinct; don't second guess a feeling of impending danger.
ix. Don't wear jewelry around your neck that won't break free.
x. Whenever possible, walk with one or two other people.
xi. Move away quickly from anything that impedes your movement unexpectedly.
xii. Use physical barriers on the street between yourself and suspicious people (Garbage bins, parked cars, benches, fire hydrants, etc.)
xiii. Don't drink too much.
xiv. Check out what is around and behind the ATM Machine before you use it.
xv. Look out away from the machine as it works your instructions
d) When riding a public utility Vehicle.
i. If possible, have someone take note of the plate number if riding a taxi.
ii. Always take a sit near the door of the vehicle.
iii. Be aware of suspicious people riding with you on the Bus or
Jeepneys. (like snatchers, hold uppers and swindlers)
e) Public places (like night clubs, restaurants, eatery, etc...)
i. Always look for exits before anything else.
ii. Select a place or seat that is near to the exit, wall on your back and
facing the door so you can see who are coming in and going out.
iii. Be watchful of people who keeps on looking at you. Don't look
back,
iv. just use your peripheral vision, it might provoke a fight.
v. If you sense danger, better leave the place.
