Message From Southpaw on Moosetalk board(Sept 8):
I went to the Devils/Bruins rookie game here in NJ and wanted to fill you guys in on how Lewis and Johnstone did in their fights. Bruin tough guy Roger Maxwell suckered Devil Chris Thompson from the Bruin bench with his gloves on, so Lewis immediatly drop his gloves and tried to fight Maxwell while Maxwell was still on his bench. While the linseman escort Lewis to the box, Maxwell leaves his bench to go to the box, but then went after Thompson again while Thompson was on the Devils bench. Lewis skates back over to the benches but can`t get at Maxwell. Now the linseman take Lewis back to the Devils penalty box, but as he was ready to go in, Maxwell skates over to him and they finally go at it. It was a pretty good fight. It looked liked Lewis was more willing to go toe to toe than Maxwell was. Lewis definitely gets the decision. There was no rematch as Maxwell got hurt during the fight and missed the rest of the game. In the last period, Johnstone went after a guy, but was tied up pretty good. It looked like he snuck in a good uppercut or two right before the linseman jumped in. I`ll give it a draw. These two teams play again tomorrow. I thought Lewis looked really impressive in Devil scrimmage games also. I think this kids got potential and should have a good year in the AHL with Albany. This coming Tuesday the Devils rookies play the Rangers rookies, i`m looking forward to a Carlyle Lewis/Jeff Kugel matchup. I`ll keep you guys posted.

Tanguay getschance alongside boyhood idol, friend Sakic
By Mike Gibb, Staff Writer
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe Sakic is respected for his versatility, but even he couldn't have imagined playing so many roles in the life of an aspiring NHLer.
In order, for Colorado Avalanche rookie forward Alex Tanguay, Sakic has been: idol, opponent, teammate, friend and linemate.
The improbable relationship began seven years ago when a 12-year-old Tanguay faced off against his hero Sakic in an exhibition game between Tanguay's peewee team and the Quebec Nordiques. Sakic, on his way to a third 100-point season in four years, toyed with his pre-teen protege.
"I remember Joe put the faceoff through my legs and scored to put me minus-1," said Tanguay with a smile.
Fast forward to the start of 1999-2000 and Tanguay is lining up on Sakic's left side as two-thirds of the Avalanche's top line.
Sakic competed in many of those exhibition competitions and didn't remember Tanguay until the two roomed together in training camp last season and the rookie reminded him of the meeting.
"Made me feel old," Sakic said.
Sakic may feel old (he's 30), but it has been Tanguay's body that has been treating the rookie like something other than a healthy 19-year-old. Tanguay's junior and short pro careers have been marred by injuries-he has played just one full season (1996-97) in the previous three. A knee injury shelved him for six of the Avs' nine exhibition games this year, but he started the regular season strongly, picking up two assists in his first two NHL games.
"I'm stretching out like I've never (done) before to make sure I won't get injured," said Tanguay, whose history includes a wrist injury and a concussion to go along with this season's trick knee.
Drafted 12th overall by the Avs in 1998, Tanguay experienced a difficult 1998-99. He played well at camp and might have made the big team, but couldn't come to contract terms and was returned to Halifax of the Quebec League for another year of junior. He had 15 points in his first five games, but suffered a concussion and missed the next three months. He returned and finished the year with 61 points in 31 games.
Now, armed with a three-year contract, a clean bill of health and a roster spot created by the shoulder injury to superstar Peter Forsberg, the 6-foot, 180-pound native of St-Justine, Que., has the chance to prove himself.
"This is a huge opportunity and I'm looking forward to it," Tanguay said. "I'm just going to work my hardest and if I can give Joe and (fellow linemate) Claude (Lemieux) a chance, I think they'll play better."
Sakic sees a special player in the man who was the boy he taught a lesson to seven years ago.
"He's going to have a great career," Sakic said. "He has great vision and he's very smart. He passes the puck real well. I've enjoyed playing with him.
"He works hard and has a great attitude and guys like that, they only get better."
