Born in Shanghai, city of decadence and over-population, I remember people used to flood the street in hope of nothing but the enrichment of themselves with disregards for each other. As the city moved toward moral indifference and ethical downturn, my father decided then that is was time for him to find a new life in the United States of America. I remembered watching his plane taking off into the skies and disappearing into the clouds. Ironically two years later, with the painful memory still deeply embedded in my mind, the time came for my departure to join my parents in my new country. Watching my family and friends waving franctically was another blow to my heart that stayed with me till today. As my plane lifted its wings into the sky, I looked down and saw my city filled with its many conspicuous blemishes and flaws, but I couldn't help but grimace in vain as the city faded into oblivian. For the city despite its many shorcomings still had shaped my very being with its distinct culture and subtle flavor.nbsp; Its custom and tradition will forever be part of who I am and what I may one day become. My name is Jay Xu and for the reasons above I am proud to call myself Shaghainese American
