After seeing a gymnastics poster on a tram Lilia knew what she wanted to be. At the age of 5 her grandmother took her to a local gym. At 12, she was invited to the famed Soviet training camp at Round lake, but after she arrived it was decided no new team members would be accepted because of the country's impending disintegration.

Instead she went to Ukraine's Koncha Zaspa Olympic Complex, near Kiev(Kyiv).

Lilia's father walked out on the family when she was 2 and her stepfather did the same a few years later. Her grandmother passed away just a few days before the '96 Olympics.
