September 13, 2001 Update

Whew, hopefully this will be the first installment of a lot of totally useless information : )  Please feel free to e-mail us and tell us when we haven't been keeping this up.  For the most part, the stuff on these pages is going to be mostly text.  Although.....

How could we resist one more of our new addition?  Actually there's more than just pride in this picture... it's also because we're trying to show a couple of things, which we'll get to in a minute.

First and foremost, Léanne is very healthy and happy.  She had her first doctor's appointment on Tuesday (yes, on September 11th, blah) and she is doing wonderfully.  She weighed in at 9# 3oz, so she's gained a little over 10 oz since birth!  Other than that about the biggest question we had for the doctor was why was her skin peeling so much, and he told us that's perfectly normal for a baby that was overdue.  Otherwise, everything checked out fine, although we forgot to ask about little red splotches that appear on her face, but they go away so quickly that we forgot about them : ).
Of course, we get a bunch of opinions about who she looks like... just like we got a lot of predictions about what the gender of our baby was going to be (which by the way almost everybody thought we were going to have a boy).  I think about the only thing any of us can really see so far is that she seems to be developing a widow's peak, just like her dad.  That's one of the reasons we posted the picture above, but it's kinda hard to see.
The other reason the picture was posted was to show her swaddled in her blanket.  Now THIS was a revelation.  This is by far the easiest way to get her to sleep, and has helped us enormously.  We hear that Alyssa (Léanne's cousin) was the same way.  By the way, for those of you out there who are confused or concerned (like we were) about putting a baby in a blanket when it seems like all you hear these days is no blankets for sleeping babies, our doctor tells us that swaddling is kinda the exception to the rule.  A light cotton blanket (that breathes well), wrapped tightly around the baby is just fine.  The problem is with loose thick blankets that overheat and obstruct the breathing of the baby.

Claire is also doing very well, although a lot has happened to her recently!  In addition to gaining a new little sister (who loves to be in Claire's arms) Claire has of course started school again.  Fifth grade, which means it's her last year in her current school!  She has the "coolest teacher", Mr. G, although he gives more homework than the other teachers.  She's made a bunch of new friends in this class, including a girl that lives only 2 doors away from us.  Of course Claire turned 11 just this past week.  Wow, you're getting old!  We had a fun time celebrating her birthday by going to BW3, and then getting a Dairy Queen cake, yum!  Finally, Claire's class is going to be spending a week up north in the wilderness in January.  She says that they'll be outside from 7AM until 9PM every day.  Are you kidding?

Theresa is LOVING staying at home with Léanne, and is not looking forward to going back to work on October 9th.  Of course this is nothing against 3M, heck, Jamie was only home for about 2 weeks, and it was torture to go back to work.  Otherwise, she is recovering well, and has lost a bunch of weight.  A little tired, but feeling great.

Jamie is plodding along as usual.  He is ecstatic to be a new father, and would love to spend all day at home.  People keep asking him if his life has changed.  And the answer is of course:  Yes, my free time is gone, I'm not getting enough sleep, and I am loving every minute of it.  The only bad thing?  Jamie learned from his relatives that the current law in Canada is that Mothers get 1 YEAR of paid (60% or more) maternity leave, and Fathers get 37 1/2 weeks of paid paternity leave.  We are insanely envious.

In general news, we've had some very nice visits recently.  Jamie's Mom came down for a few days from Canada to see her new, and first, grandchild.  Very clearly they fell completely in love with each other.  Last night, our house was quite busy as both Ann, Theresa's friend from school and work, and Jerry and Edith, Theresa's parents, came over for a visit.  Ann was actually brave enough to try Jamie's cooking.  This on top of the fact that Ann's husband Curt is serving his reserve duty in Guam right now.

I think that'll be about it for now.  I hope everyone is healthy and happy, and we look forward to hearing from all of you!
