The aptly named Center City Chess Club will host the official 2001 PA State Chess Championship tournament on August 25-26 at St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church on N. 7th Street in downtown Allentown.

The local club is hosting the event on behalf of the Pennsylvania State Chess Federation (PSCF), the official state organization recognized by the U.S. Chess Federation (USCF), the national governing body for chess in the United States.

At least 100 players, ranging from strong masters to beginners, are expected to compete in the championship. The highest-scoring Pennsylvania native will become the official 2001 PA state chess champion. PSCF President Ira Lee Riddle, of Warminster, Pa., will direct the event.

Allentown has hosted the state championship in previous years, most recently in 1998.

Registration is from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM on Saturday, Aug. 25. Rounds are 10-2:30-7 and 10-2:30. A separate scholastic event open to players in grades K-12 will be held on August 25, in conjunction with the early rounds of the championship. For all events, membership in the PSCF and USCF is required and can be purchased on-site. Spectators are welcome and there is no fee for watching the games.
