BILLERICA - The United Women's summer soccer team fell to
Recless of Lexington, 3-1, in the
Eastern Massachusetts Women's Soccer League quarter-finals.
United (12-1-2) played the defending Division 2 champions tough for the
full 90 minutes paced by the fine play of Rachael Button, Karen Cotter,
Jessie DeFrancisco, Amy DeGironimo, Erin Slavin, and Nikki Downs in goal.
Karen Cotter scored the lone United goal on a penalty kick in the first
half.
United
was working with a limited roster as several key players were either out
injured or had returned to college. Missing from action were Tina
Carrabba (injured), Kelly Jillett (injured),
Colleen
Murphy (injured), Meghan
Walsh (injured), Stacey Young (injured), MJ Sullivan (school), and Brittany Traynor (school).
"You can't lose those kinds of players and be OK," said coach
Matt Cotter. "Kelly was the first to go down and that was a
blow. We knew about losing MJ and Brittany. But, the 2 that
really sealed our fate were the injuries to Stacey and Colleen."
Young was the team's leading scorer (9-8-17) and Murphy was a mainstay
on the defense.
"What can you do? You go with what you've been dealt.
The girls played well. They worked so hard during the
season that it almost seems unfair to lose this early in the
playoffs."
United finished the regular season undefeated, claiming the number one
seed in the playoffs. They won their final 11 games.
United competed in Division 2 of the Eastern Massachusetts Women's
Soccer League.
