LEXINGTON - The United Women's summer soccer team fell to
top-seeded Recless, 2-1, in the
Eastern Massachusetts Women's Soccer League Championship.
United
drew first blood roughly ten minutes into the game as Joanna
Tzannos gathered a loose ball in front of the Recless goal and fired a
rocket past the goalkeeper for a 1-0 lead.
Recless tied the game just before halftime.
With just under nine minutes remaining in the game, Recless scored
to take a 2-1 advantage.
United
attacked with a fury and with two minutes remaining Karen Cotter caught up
to a ball behind the defense as the Recless goalkeeper was challenging. Her shot from about 30 yards out was not hard enough, as a
charging defender stopped it on the goal line.
Nikki Downs turned in a brilliant performance in goal for United.
United (9-5-2) started the summer season off slow, compiling
a 2-3-0 record through the season's first 5 games. However, the team rallied to go unbeaten in 7 of their final
8 games to secure a playoff position and capture third place in their
division.
United competed in Division 2 of the Eastern Massachusetts Women's
Soccer League.
