Penny Taylor Holt was born in London and lived in London all her life. Penny started boxing at age 16. During her time in the Amateurs, Holt was 39-7, but won gold at the Senior European boxing championship, and won gold at the Women's International tournament.

Her trainer since she started, Deon Williams, was initially against Penny going pro in the WEBA, that was until she made it into the Women's International Tournament and ranked ranked #29 in the world in her division, upset the #1 boxer rated boxer in the world by KO. After that fight Deon Williams set her up to replace the injured boxer Jodi Carlson, who retired.
