BJ Fulton began boxing at age 11, coached by her father, a state police officer. As a teenager, she also wrestled, played softball and soccer, and swam competitively. Her high school wrestling practices had a little extra excitement as BJ found she was specially attracted to girls who submitted to her as she pinned them to the mat.
The pretty tomboy laid down an unusual rule for any boy who wanted to date her ... he had to spar with her at her father's boxing gym first! Although many were eager to try a private sparring session with the cute blonde, BJ never showed them any mercy. Very few wanted to spend more time with her after she had knocked them around a boxing ring behind the gym's closed doors!
Soon BJ's best friends were other girl athletes. "They smelled nicer than the boys anyway", she says.
Boxing became BJ's first love as she began to compete in amateur tournaments. Her ring success kept boys away from her but she soon had a devoted cheering section of her girl friends. After winning the Kentucky state championship, she went to the national tournament in Chicago.
BJ made it to the finals, where a toe-to-toe slugfest with a more experienced boxer from New York City was stopped when BJ got a very bloody nose. BJ was in tears after the fight was over because she felt she would have won it if the male referee could get over seeing a pretty girl with her nose bleeding.
But her only boxing loss became the turning point in her boxing career after a big time promoter from Chicago saw her fight. Her father agreed to let BJ fight professionally if he stayed on as her trainer.
The stage was set for BJ to join the WEBA, where she hopes to become a lightweight champion.
