Vicky Chan vs. Jordan Strongarm
Canada's Vicky Chan
was looking to avenge her loss to Carolina's Jordan Strongarm six months ago by
challenging her to a battle at Wu's. It was obvious that Vicky wanted it badly
after an opening round in which both girls dished out serious leather but by the
end it was Jordan giving ground. It seemed that the bell saved Jordan from going
down, which had Vicky going angrily to her corner to wait another shot at Jordan
in the second. Things didn't work out as Vicky had hoped, however, as the
second round saw Jordan repay Vicky for the first, staggering her several
times against the ropes, but taking punishment as well. The third turned
into an all-out brawl, with all normal boxing rules tossed out the window as
low blows and grabs dominated. Vicky came out the worse
for wear as she started the fourth bleeding from the nose and from a cut under her
left eye. The fourth saw the action slow down although the illegal punches
and moves kept flying and Jordan was taunting a
tiring Vicky.
It wasn't till the fifth that finally one boxer went down ... and it
was Vicky from a savage right hook followed by a left. She was quickly up by the
count of five but was quickly hammered by Jordan who pounded her against the
ropes at will until the bell. The bell for the sixth sounded like the death
bell for Vicky's hopes as Jordan quickly resumed her assault, working Vicky into the ropes then
into a corner where a great one-two combination sent
her down for a six count. A little more taunting by Jordan couldn't fire
Vicky up enough to stop the inevitable ... a tremendous uppercut
rolled Vicky's eyes back in her head and down she went for the ten count. The
crowd cheered both fighters as this was the prelude for an awesome and rather
bloody night of fights to come!
Tammy Quinton vs. Janet Vigil
Quinton stuns Vigil with KO in Round 3
It's amazing that although these two fighters have been in the WEBA since
it started in 1997, they hadn't fought each other till just this month!
Now they would go at it again at Wu's to settle the score from their first
meeting, as Tammy Quinton felt the draw she
got against Janet Vigil was not a true testament to her
skills. The first round saw both girls firing with both barrels, neither giving
much thought to defense. Janet won out with a hook to
Tammy's body that sent her down to the canvas. Tammy was up quickly but she
might have thought to stay down longer to catch her breath as Janet quickly
dropped her again, this time with a right to the jaw that nearly put
Tammy out for the count. Tammy used the ropes to get to her feet and was lucky
that the bell saved her from more punishment. Janet was visibly
angry as she returned to her corner, having hoped to put Tammy away early.
Janet took the fight to Tammy again in the second and systematically
punished the taller fighter with hooks and jabs that had Tammy
reeling around the ring. Unfortunately Janet seemed to lack the power to
put Tammy down again. She also took her fair share of punches and
was bleeding from above her left eye by the bell.
The third saw Janet finally
find her opening and send Tammy down twice, once from a hook to the body and
quickly again with a straight left. The second knockdown seemed to get Tammy mad
but she also took a punishing hook to the ribcage that left her
cringing in the corner and trying to tie Janet up in a clinch. Tammy decided she
had had enough and began to fight dirty at close quarters. Janet seemed to have punched herself out and
seemed stunned as Tammy hammered away at her with a fierce counterattack. Tammy
won a toe-to-toe exchange and backed a stunned Janet into the pads with a blizzard of punches.
Janet only mounted token retaliation before a great left to the chin put
her down to the canvas for the first time. Janet got up at the seven count but could only
attempt to clinch and defend herself as Tammy continued to hammer away.
Finally a ferocious uppercut rocked Janet and sent her down for the count.
The crowd and Janet's corner were shocked as it was Tammy, who at first seemed to be losing this
fight badly, who
suddenly emerged victorious.
Carolyn Smith vs. Emma Waghorn
Smith overwhelms Waghorn in Round 10
Emma Waghorn didn't sound too eager to accept this fight against Carolyn
Smith, but she's not one to back down from any challenge. The fight started
pretty even although Carolyn seemed to get the upper hand. The second round seemed to
be prophetic of what was to come as Carolyn sent Emma to the canvas twice,
once from a huge jab, and the second time from a superb right hook. Although Emma
made a comeback at the end of the round, the round didn't
bode well for Emma's chances for the rest of the fight with a cut under her left
eye already
looking bad. Emma kept her momentum going in
the third, hammering Carolyn with a few good shots, but Carolyn kept
hammering back, and in the fourth she sent Emma down again with a merciless left
hook to the body. The fifth saw Emma coming back again, even
taunting Carolyn a bit and bloodying her nose, but it didn't last as
Carolyn quickly took charge again in the sixth and hammered Emma for
most of the round. Emma came back late in the round with a few punches,
even making Carolyn's nosebleed a bit worse, but the seventh was to be a brawl
that Emma simply couldn't keep up with. A staggering cross to the chin sent
her down mid-round and she was down again later from a well timed one-two punch
and the bell ensured a third knockdown didn't happen.
The eighth saw
Carolyn continue to dominate. Although Emma didn't go down and managed
to bloody Carolyn's nose some more, it seemed that Emma stayed on her feet
only by pure will. She didn't even throw a punch before she was
dropped by a brutal left hook to the face in the ninth. Emma still showed Carolyn that
she had some fight left in her for the rest of the ninth, hammering
back and even getting Carolyn in trouble with a few shots. Emma valiantly
came out swinging in the tenth, but Carolyn quickly put a stop to it with
several furious blows culminating in a ferocious uppercut that dropped Emma
hard. Emma got up but was obviously out of it and Carolyn quickly charged
in for the kill. The crowd was on its feet and cheering as
Emma wouldn't go easily, swinging back gamely right until the end, when a huge
left hook dropped her to the canvas again. This time it was over, as it wasn't until the count of nine that Emma
actually got to just her hands and knees. A big KO victory for Carolyn, but the
crowd cheered Emma as well for her tenacity and heart.
Cyan Locklear vs. Rose Mora
Locklear makes short work of Mora in Round 3!
On paper, these two fighters were as evenly matched as any in WEBA. Their previous
fight had been a third round knockout for Rose. Cyan
looked to even that score in this battle at Wu's but it was Rose who
sent Cyan down in the first with a ferocious flurry after both had
been hammering away at each other. Cyan quickly got to her feet and the
fight went on with neither giving ground till the bell. Although Cyan went down,
it was Rose who sported blood from her nose and a cut above her
right eye going into the second. The second saw Cyan quickly
dominating the fight. Even with a flurry from Rose in the middle of the
round it was a big round for Cyan as Rose was a bloody mess and
clearly having difficulty seeing by the end of the round. The cut above Rose's
right eye was bleeding badly and was likely the cause of the third round
massacre. Rose couldn't see clearly to throw her punches while Cyan landed
at will on Rose, finally sending her to the canvas with a perfect left cross.
Rose managed to get back up and even land a single last-ditch right cross ... but
Cyan easily took it and
continued to work a wobbling Rose over until Mora took three huge rights to
her mouth that did her in. Rose tried to regain her feet, but mercifully she
couldn't and the match was awarded to Cyan while a badly battered Rose was taken to the
Pattaya hospital.
Natalya Borozdina vs. Paula Goodwyn
Borozdina grinds Goodwyn down and KO's her in Round 17!
"Bomber" Borozdina and
Pretty Paula Goodwyn
brought some unfinished WEBA business to the grudge ring at Wu's. The Russian newcomer had appeared to be heading
for a big upset over the British veteran on the regular WEBA card
when Paula had been disqualified for a string
of infractions that included holding and hitting and a flagrant head
butt. They agreed to settle it at Wu's, where Borozdina had already KO'd an overmatched Tammy Quinton, while
Goodwyn had been on the short end of a series of grueling
bouts, losing to Claire Freeman, to Transam Lottaporn
and twice to Rose Mora.
Paula looked eager for action at the start of the rematch,
and threw lots of leather at the Russian in the opening round.
Natalya showed ring skills as she slipped some of
Paula's shots and counterpunched well. Neither had
the upper hand for long in the opener and both went to their corners
looking tense. Paula dropped Natalya for a five count with
a well-timed one-two early in the second, but Natalya battled
back and put Paula on the canvas in a corner later. Paula got
up quickly and walked into a firestorm as Natalya unloaded on
her with both fists for most of the rest of the round. Paula
went to her corner looking dazed by this onslaught, while
Natalya looked angry at not having put her away.
The third round saw Natalya beating Paula to the punch regularly, and Paula looked stunned as
she went to her corner with significant swelling around her eyes. The Russian was unmarked, but out of breath.
Borozdina continued to set the pace in the fourth, beating Paula to the punch and wearing her down with a high
pressure attack, just as she had done in their WEBA
fight. Paula was dropped f6r a three c64nt by a right to the head and was
hanging on to Natalya desperately in the late going. The
Russian was looking confident but Paula made a fight of it in
the fifth with an aggressive round that frequently had
Borozdina's back to the ropes. Paula worked on
Natalya's body effectively in this round and also did some
dirty work in the clinches with her elbows. Borozdina reacted by setting down on her
punches harder in the sixth and also tossed some elbows of
her own, only to get a head butt from Paula! Natalya unleashed a ferocious attack to Paula's
body and
sent Paula to her knees clutching her ribs in pain just
before the bell. Paula's left eye was now closing, and
her corner worked on the cut over her right eye between the rounds.
Natalya tried to put the fight away in the seventh, and sent
Paula to the canvas twice with power punches to the head.
Goodwyn was taking a beating, but she kept getting back up and trying to tie the
Russian up, Natalya showed her frustration as Paula kept coming back after taking her best shots, but she
kept throwing leather at the veteran in a lop-sided round. Paula was
in trouble again early in the eighth, and went to the
canvas for a four count. Natalya continued to whale away
on Paula, whose main asset seemed to be a chin that might let her outlast the Russian who was using her as a
heavy bag. Both of Paula's eyes
were now closing, and a WEBA referee might have stopped the bout, but this was
Wu's so the barrage
would continue. Natalya showed frustration and dealt Paula some payback in the
ninth with a head butt, a low blow and a punch to the
throat, but Paula still kept going! Paula ate more leather and was knocked down twice in the tenth, but
Natalya still couldn't find the way to close her out. The gritty Brit was taking a pounding but still landing
occasional solid shots of her own.
Paula gave her fans some hope in the twelfth
with an early flurry that found the range and hurt Natalya. The Russian
showed some agility making Paula miss, however, and
put a stop to Paula's offense with a good comeback
late in the round. It was a standoff in the thirteenth
but Natalya took control in the fourteenth and
worked Paula over against the ropes. Goodwyn went to
the canvas two more times, barely beating the second
count with help from the ring ropes. Natalya clearly had the bout under control but seemed to lack
the finishing touch to finally put the stubborn Paula away. The fifteenth was
the same story as Goodwyn
showed an awesome ability to absorb punishment without
folding while Natalya could only put her down for a short
count. The sixteenth saw two tired fighters slowing down
and missing, but Natalya finally found the range again in the
seventeenth. Paula was decked for a four count by
the first punch of the round, then was driven into a
corner where Natalya put her down again with
a ferocious uppercut. Time and will finally ran out on the exhausted Goodwyn,
who couldn't make it
back to her feet this time and Borozdina's glove was raised in victory after a
marathon bout that had the fans admiring the Russian's boxing skills and the
British girl's chin.
Becca Heartman vs. Amber Taltos
Taltos wins bloody brawl in Round 10
The
atmosphere was electric as the high rollers at ringside knew what to expect as Becca Heartman
returned to Wu's for a fourth shot at
Amber Taltos. The popular Texas Heartbreaker had fought three bloody battles with
the fiery Puerto Rican redhead and had come close to a KO win every time ... only to be knocked out
herself when Amber got the upper hand. Both had now won WEBA junior titles and Becca came
back to Pattaya determined to end her losing
streak against her arch-rival.
Becca quickly put enormous pressure on Amber, working the redhead onto the ropes where she
pounded her body and also delivered a thumb
to her left eye!. Amber got mad and hammered Becca into a corner, but a well-timed uppercut sent
her wobbling into the ropes, where Becca dropped her for a short count with a series of
body shots. The
round ended with Amber taking
a tremendous pummeling against the ropes. Becca looked cocky after this early
success but Amber stormed
back and they went toe to toe in the second. Becca was bleeding from her mouth
but she got the upper hand in the late going
with Amber on the ropes and Amber looked shaken up at the bell.
The third saw Amber finding her range and she rocked Becca with shots to the head. Becca
was wobbling and trying to tie Amber up when Amber dropped her for a nine count with a big flurry.
The rest of the third was all Amber but she
couldn't put Becca way. The Heartbreaker was now bleeding
heavily from her mouth and her corner worked hard between rounds
to clean her up. Becca came on strong early in the fourth and knocked Amber down for
a quick count. Both began to fight dirty, but Becca got
the upper hand again and knocked Amber down for
an eight count. Becca's body punching was taking a toll as Amber had trouble keeping her gloves up.
Both landed heavy leather at times in the fifth but Becca kept the upper hand as
she worked Amber's
body hard (and threw in a low blow for good measure!). Amber
looked shaky at the end of this round as Becca looked like
she might be about to take over completely, but this all changed
in a toe-to-toe exchange early in the sixth. They traded
shots to the head and body, and a wicked hook
sent Becca to her knees clutching her ribs.
Becca was up at the four count, but Amber was there to smash her down again for a nine count.
Becca struggled back to her feet and fought desperately,
including a thumb to Amber's eye, but was driven to
a corner and dropped for a seven count by a hook to her
stomach. Becca got up fighting mad and was able to back Amber up with
a series of vicious shots to the body. The fight was now taking
a toll on both boxers ... Becca was
spattered with blood while Amber's
left eye was closing and she was cut over her left eyebrow.
Becca
worked the cut over Amber's left eye
as they traded shots to each other's heads in the seventh.
Becca got the better of this and pinned Amber
against the ropes, where she unleashed a stunning
head-body attack that dropped Amber to all fours for a
six count. Becca dominated this round and Amber rested groggily on the ropes before going
to her corner with blood streaming from the ugly gash
over her left eye. It again looked like Beccas would finally get her revenge as she had Amber
bloody and reeling around the ring in the eighth. Becca knocked Amber down for
a three count, then taunted her with her gloves down ...
a tactic that may have backfired as Amber uncorked several
hard shots to Becca's head late in the round and Becca went
to her corner with blood running from her mouth.
The crowd was hoarse from cheering both fighters on in what had become
another epic slugfest.
Both landed heavily to start the ninth and the dirty tactics escalated when Amber
smashed a backfist into Becca's nose, which began to
bleed profusely. Amber began to taunt Becca, but the
Heartbreaker fought back ferociously despite blood now
streaming from both her nose and her mouth. Amber was hurt by a
low blow, then backed into the ropes where Becca ripped into
her with a series of uppercuts. Amber took a nine count, then
tried to tie Becca up, but was rocked by more power shots to the
head. A huge left uppercut to the jaw dropped her for
another nine count just before the bell and both girls were a mess as they went
to their corners with their boxing gear splattered with blood. But both
pumped sky-high with adrenaline by their rivalry and by the crowd that had packed the Fighting Tigers
club to see just this kind of slugfest!
Becca roughed Amber
up early in the tenth, hurting her with a left to the solar
plexus before a roundhouse right sent Amber's
mouthpiece flying ...and Amber to the canvas for a seven count! Amber got up fighting mad and they went toe to
toe again. A vicious low blow hurt Amber again but she replied with
a sequence of power shots to Becca's already-battered
nose, which now began to gush blood. The Heartbreaker was now having
trouble breathing, with both her nose and mouth bleeding badly, and the wheels
came off yet again for the tenacious
Texan. Amber finally got the upper hand when
she dropped Becca for a seven count with a left to the jaw.
Becca survived this knockdown but she was in huge trouble as Amber
pounded her round the ring, looking for the closer. A mammoth uppercut lifted Becca to
her toes and dumped her face down on the canvas. With fans at ringside screaming
for her to get up, she beat the count with help from ring ropes and tried to
battle on, but she was now groggy and open for whatever Amber
could throw. Amber shredded Becca's crumbled defense on the way
to the final brutal knockdown ... a left to the jaw that collapsed the
battered Texan on the canvas in another crushing defeat. The Fighting Tigers patrons
had got what they came for ... ten rounds of
ferocious action that could have gone either way, but "Midnight" had now
racked up a perfect 4-0 record at Wu's entirely at
Becca's expense.
Becca's
tremendous fight had been in vain but she could take some
consolation that Amber was also unable to fight on the next
WEBA card, and will have to sit out while the gash over her left
eye heals.
Claire Freeman vs. Tanya Popova
Popova batters Freeman to KO in Round 3!
Tanya Popova is the WEBA's most durable champion and has ruled the
welterweight division since August 1999! She's never
lost to anyone except Heather Corrigan. The 5'7" 142-lb brawler from
Novosibirsk wasn't fazed at all by facing the 5'11", 149-lb WEBA
middleweight champion "Crazy Claire" Freeman, and looked impatient to
get to work on her at the opening bell.
Claire came out swinging but Tanya countered well as they
both explored each other's styles. Claire began to put her
combinations together and landed several solid shots to Tanya's
body that got the Siberian brawler mad! Tanya charged
forward and backed Claire against the ropes, where she cut loose
with a ferocious barrage. Claire was soon hurt and totally
confused as Tanya rained leather on her, and the round ended
with Claire stunned and wobbly against the ropes.
Tanya came out slinging leather in the second, and taunting Claire by
sticking her chin out and daring her to hit it. The Russian
was cocky and Claire looked unusually tentative. Tanya took a few
hard shots in early in the round but once again was able to
bully Claire against the ropes and into a corner where she
planted both feet and unloaded. Claire ate a series of brutal
uppercuts that sent finally put her on the canvas for a short
count. The WEBA champ tried to stay out of trouble until the bell.
Popova had Freeman intimidated and looked cocky
in her corner between rounds.
Claire tried to box her way out of trouble at the start of the third but
Tanya continued her intimidation with a thumb to Claire's
left eye early in the round. Claire came back with some
dirty tactics of her own, raking Popova's face with the
cuff of her glove and throwing a low blow into the Russian's
trunks. This approach just got Tanya mad and she began to
hammer Claire with both fists, again knocking the big
American into the ropes. A savage body attack dropped
Claire to her knees clutching her ribs in pain, and she
then fell to her side on the canvas, clearly hurting.
Claire struggled to her feet at the five count,
but Tanya kept up the merciless barrage and she was
soon on the canvas again, now with blood running from her
mouth. Claire struggled to her feet with help from
the ring ropes then tried to tie Tanya up. The Russian
wasn't having any of that and she continued to rip hooks and
uppercuts through Claire's crumbling defense. Claire was
reeling against the ropes when Tanya finally decked her for
the full count with a murderous hook to the jaw.
Popova boosted her reputation as the most dangerous of all the
Russians with this ferocious demolition of the big girl from
Connecticut.
