Rose Mora vs. Paula Goodwyn
Mora is badly bloodied but wins in Round 12
Rose Mora and Paul Goodwyn went right at each other from the opening
bell. Rose got the better of it at first but was dropped to her knees
by fierce body punching at the end of the third. It continued as a
slugfest with Rose winning the battles, but she was cut over right eye
and dropped by an uppercut in the fifth. Paula couldn't cash in and
Rose began to take the fight to her again. Paula took a short count in
the seventh after eating a huge left to the head but battled on and
opened the cut over Rose's right eye some more later in the round.
Paula continued to work on Rose's eye but could not control the action
and looked increasingly desperate. Paula busted the cut wide open in
the tenth. Rose fought ferociously with blood running down her face and
dropped Paula twice late in the round. The eleventh was brutal as Paula
continued to work on the cut and fought dirty. A head butt stunned Rose
and she was dropped for an eight count but she battled on, now covered
in blood. There was no way this fight would have been allowed to
continue in the main WEBA, but Rose pulled out the win in the twelfth
with a huge effort. She drove Paula into the ropes and smashed her to
the canvas twice, the second time for the full count as the British
battler was exhausted. The Italian "Assassin" was a mess but stood
victorious. Both fighters have to sit out a WEBA card to recover from
this one!
Ricki Evans vs. Carolyn Smith
Evans with a quick KO in Round 8
Carolyn Smith had retired from the regular WEBA ring but left with
a grudge
outstanding with Ricki Evans, who was happy to catch up to her
hated blonde rival in Pattaya. Carolyn was the early aggressor
but Ricki drew first blood with a jab to her right eyebrow.
They boxed warily for several rounds but Ricki began to get the
better of it in the fifth when she wobbled Carolyn with a good right
and opened the cut over her eye some more. The pace picked up and
Carolyn landed some good shots in the seventh. Ricki came back with
a strong body attack in the eighth and got Carolyn in trouble against
the ropes. Carolyn's defense collapsed and Ricki unloaded with
both fists, knocking Carolyn's mouthpiece flying and Smith herself
to the canvas for a spectacular ending to a relatively slow fight.
Claire Freeman vs. Cindy Lee
Freeman the winner in Round 17 of a grueling battle!
"Crazy" Claire Freeman quickly showed she could back Cindy "Venus"
Lee up
as she worked the smaller fighter over against the ropes. Cindy got a
few good licks in but was clearly rattled at the break.
Claire continued to dish it out in the second. Lee fought back but
was outpunched and bleeding from her mouth after several rounds.
Cindy was knocked to the canvas after some tough infighting in the
fourth and needed to make something happen soon. She doubled up
her punches in the fifth, dropped Claire
for a six count, and hammered her against the ropes afterwards.
But Lee lacked the power to end it even with the bigger fighter briefly
dazed and wobbly. Claire walked past Cindy's best shots and wend head-hunting
in the sixth. Cindy was dropped for a
five count and went to her corner with
swelling around both eyes. Even so, Lee's best rounds were ahead as
she put up stiff resistance and Freeman began to tire. Lee drove Freeman onto
the ropes in the eighth, and dropped her for a long count.
Claire got up wobbly and took a further hammering against the ropes,
but still survived. Cindy kept the pressure on
and sent Claire to the canvas once more in the ninth, to
cheers from a crowd that was now rooting for the tenacious
Chinese-American. Claire made her own stand
by mixing up the head and body attack in the tenth. She sent
Lee to the canvas again with more tough body punching,
outmuscled her at close quarters. They traded more evenly as
the fight went into late-round territory that was unfamiliar
to either. Lee took another long count near the end of
the thirteenth. Her left eye was now completely closed. Freeman
could smell victory as she dictated the ring movement and
ground Cindy down as the fight went to unheard-of length.
Lee took another count after eating an overhand right
in the fifteenth, but rallied again in the sixteenth. Her
mouth was now bleeding badly enough to distract her. An
enormous right decked her again in the seventeenth, but
she still didn't quit. It took a string of Freeman's best punches,
and two more trips to the canvas, before Cindy Lee finally
succumbed. She had given a fighter who outweighed her by 12
pounds the fight of her life, but Claire Freeman was simply too
strong for her when all was said and done.
Rita Fields vs. Brigette Amundson
Fields comes from behind to win in Round 14
The B league's Brigette Amundson put up quite a fight against the A
league's Rita Fields. The Golden Bridge used her speed and ring
movement to counter The Body's power. Rita had her hands full and
looked nervous in the early going but bloodied Brigette with some heavy
shots to the face. Amundson had Fields rattled at times but she lacked
the punching power to make her back up for a whole round. Brigette
found the range with several huge shots in the sixth and Fields went to
her corner badly cut under her left eye. This fired Rita up and the
seventh was a war in which Brigette landed more punches but Rita did
more damage. Rita continued to pound Brigette's face in the eighth but
was clearly surprised when Brigette unleashed a tremendous barrage to
her chest which sent Rita to her knees for a six count. Amundson set
the pace for several rounds and looked in good shape at the end of the
eleventh. But Fields mounted a strong comeback at the start of the
twelfth and hurt Amundson with a huge right to the head. Brigette, who
had been cocky and starting to taunt Rita, suddenly backed off and
became much less aggressive, giving Fields a break she would soon
regret. Brigette rocked Rita with a huge right to the jaw at the start
of the fourteenth but this seemed to revitalize Fields, who unloaded
with both fists and dropped Amundson for a six count with a roundhouse
left. Brigette never recovered properly, and left herself wide open
for two crashing blows to her jaw. The first dropped her for a nine
count, and the second ended the fight.
Amundson was totally unrepentant after this fight:
"Shoot, ya got lucky, Fields. I gotta admit you're tuff, but for a so-called welterweight contender in the A League you didn't look so darned hot for
a while. I have to admit ya wore me down after a dozen rounds or so and I got careless. Couple sucker punches got me in trouble. I'm gonna work on my
endurance, and you'll be toast, babe. I want another shot at you a couple months from now and I'll kick yer ass next time. Wu's hanging around outside this
dressing room to offer me a contract 'cuz he likes my style ... at least I think it's Wu, may be that clone of his. Okay so ya got lucky and beat me. But that
was just Round One Missy! You'll hafta cross this Bridge again one day! Unless you're too scared after the hiding I gave ya at the start of that fight."
Jeni Stone vs. Sheryl Hammer
Hammer bludgeons Stone to win in Round 11
Nobody expected a ballet dance as two of the WEBA's best-known brawlers
tore up the rule book and went at each other. Hammer was
aggressive early on and Stone appeared to be in shock as Hammer
punched her in the throat. Stone was
dropped for an eight count in the third, and was treated to two of the
most blatant elbow strikes we've ever seen as she tried to fend Hammer
off later in the round. Stone wa unable to stem the onslaught until the
fifth, when she briefly backed Hammer onto the ropes with a couple of
stiff uppercuts. Hammer came back from this with a head butt and
continued to intimidate the Australian between rounds. The crowd
roared when Jeni caught Sheryl with a huge right to the jaw
part way through the sixth, and quickly deposited the stunned Hammer on
the seat of her turquoise trunks with her glove to her nose. Sheryl was
up at seven, but Jeni rang her bell rung several times more before the
round ended ... with Jeni puffing and blowing from effort and Sheryl
visibly dazed. Another elbow strike bloodied Jeni's mouth early in the
seventh. Jeni went defensive for a while, then came back hard to show
she still meant business. Hammer took Stone apart legally in the
eighth, picking her spots and delivering solid blows. Jeni suddenly
seemed to have no answer for Sheryl and was dropped by a left to the
mouth just before the bell. Her left eye was closing, but
she rallied in the ninth to get Hammer in trouble
against the ropes. The round ended with Sheryl's left eye also
closing. It was now gut time ... and both landed solidly through the
tenth in a straight- ahead war of attrition. Jeni worked
Sheryl's body early in the eleventh, but was caught by a sudden one-two
that dropped her for a four count. Sheryl made no mistake after Jeni
got up. A jab split Jeni's lip ... and moments later an almighty right
swing landed flush on Jeni's jaw, dropping her for the full
count. A truly ugly win for Hammer, whose tactics might have got her
tossed from a normal WEBA ring, and the latest in a string of setbacks
for Stone against A League competition.
