"UFC XII - Judgement Day" was held on
February 7th 1997 in Alabama, after a last-minute change, due to
the fact that NY state demanded different rules. I consider it
one of the best UFC's up to date, as it was filled with
excitement and good fights. For the second time the UFC was not
an 8-man tournament. UFC XII had a 4-man lightweight tournament
(199 lbs. and under) and a 4-man heavyweight tournament (200 lbs
and above), as well as a superfight between UFC 10 and 11 champ
Mark "The Hammer" Coleman and then-Superfight champ Dan
"The Beast" Severn. Well, here are the results and
match descriptions...
Semi-Final #1
Jerry Bohlander (USA, Submission Fighting) vs. Rainy
Martinez(USA, Wrestling)
Jerry Bohlander, trained by Ken Shamrock at The Lion's den fought
Rainy Martinez, a former NAVY SEAL trained by UUFC '96 champ Don
Frye. Both changed a few punches on their feet, until Bohlander
performed a take-down, landing in the cross-mount position.
Martinez then executed a nice maneuver, but Jerry got up and
attacked him again. Bohlander mounted Martinez and started
punching him, and when martinez turned his back, Bohlander
applied a rear-naked choke.
Winner: Jerry Bohlander by submission
Semi-Final #2
Wallid Ismail (Brazil, Jiu-Jitsu) vs. Yoshiki Takahashi
(Japan, Pancrase)
Wallid started off with a take-down attempt, which Takahashi
successfully avoided by clinging on to the fence, which (unknown
to him) was against the rules. Wallid held on and kept trying,
while Takahashi landed several blows to his face. John McCarthy
warned Takahashi several times that it was against the rules to
hold on to the fence, but Takahashi didn't seem to understand.
Takahashi kept hitting Ismail till they went to the ground, where
he was in Wallid's guard. Wallid tried to defend himself from
Takahashi's punches, but it didn't work. It was a pretty good
fight, till the time limit was up. Takahashi won by decision
because he was constantly attacking.
Winner: Yoshiki Takahashi by unanimous judges'
descision (3-0)
Final:
Jerry Bohlander vs. Nick Sanzo (USA, Jiu-Jitsu)
Sanzo replaced Yoshiki takahashi, who beat Wallid Ismail by
decision but was unable to continue due to a broken hand.
Bohlander executed the takedown immediately, and performed an
awesome Crucifix choke, which I had never seen or heard of.
Lightweight Champion: Jerry Bohlander by submission
Semi-Final #1
Scott "The Pitbull" Ferrozzo (USA, Pitfighting)
vs. Jim Mullen (USA, Kickboxing)
Ferrozzo, who is trained by Don Frye, took on Jim Mullen, a
fighter I had never seen till this fight. I expected Mullen to be
a little stronger and well-built rather than his flabby,
out-of-shape-like appearance, since he is ranked #1 by the WKA.
Well, Ferrozzo took Mullen down where he literally clobbered him.
Mullen was bleeding, so McCarthy stopped the fight so the doctors
could check him. He was still in conditions to continue, so he
did. Well, Ferrozzo took hik town again and started pounding him,
and kneed him on the face 3 times, when the fight was stopped.
Winner: Scott Ferrozzo by strikes
Semi-Final #2
Vitor Belfort (Brazil, Jiu-Jitsu) vs. Tra Telligman
(USA, Submission Fighting)
Belfort, a 19-year old Jiu-Jitsu fighter fought the experienced
Telligman, from The Lion's Den, hoping to show that his 14 second
demolition of Jon Hess in Superbrawl 2 was no lucky shot. Vitor
surrounded Telligman against the octagon fence and started
pounding him like Mike Tyson. Both went to the ground, where
Vitor was able to land many punches and elbows before Telligman
verbally submitted.
Winner: Vitor Belfort by Submission
Final:
Vitor Belfort vs. Scott Ferrozzo
Vitor again started clobbering Ferrozzo with his ultra fast and
powerful hands till Ferrozzo fell down on his stomach. Vitor
mounted his back and started delivering devastating blows and
elbows, till the ref stopped it. Ferrozzo was unaware that the
fight was over, so he stood up and nearly threw Vitor.
Heavyweight Champion:
Vitor Belfort by strikes
Dan "The Beast" Severn (USA, Wrestling) vs. Mark
"The Hammer" Coleman (USA, Wrestling)
This was a match-up between to world-class wrestlers - Dan
Severn, the then-reigning superfight champ and Mark Coleman, the
undefeated winner of UFC 10 and 11. Coleman dominated the entire
fight. He took severn down and mounted him. As Severn was
clinging on to Coleman, Coleman gave Severn a neck-crank, forcing
him to tap.
Superfight Champion: Mark Coleman by submission
This was one of the best UFC's ever in my opininion. Vitor
Belfort was just outstanding, demonstrating awesome boxing and
striking skills, but his ground abilities were not tested. Mark
Coleman proved he is the best there is, and awaits more guys to
beat up. I think he could beat Vitor, unless Vitor is as great on
the ground as we all hope he is.
