The above picture is from a special 10x8 that the Mariners produced counting down to his 300th win. This one has been autographed and dated 5-6-82 by Gaylord Perry.

Before the season started Gaylord Perry was only three wins away from a Hall of Fame milestone, 300 wins. Not since Early Wynn won his 300th in 1963 had a pitcher reached that mark. On this May evening Perry would become only the 15th pitcher in baseball history to win as many games.

Gaylord Perry became the first Mariner to land on the cover of Sports Illustrated with this May 17, 1982 issue. Also, the Mariners placed his image on the 1983 issues of On Deck game programs.

Because a win was not guaranteed on any given start, a certificate was available after the 300th victory. Fans with tickets from the game were able to obtain these special "I was in attendance" certificates to mount with their tickets.

To help commemorate his victory, the Mariners held a Gaylord Perry Night on May 15, 1982. Fans were handed this special fold out with pictures from Perry's different teams, career stats, and facts about the pitcher.

Pictures from the night

27, 369 fans attended Perry's 300th win in the Kingdome. After the game Perry drank a toast with his manager Rene Lachemann and received a call from President Reagan.

Baseball Hall of Fame

July 21, 1991 Gaylord Perry become the first former Mariner to be elected into the Hall of Fame. Pitcher Ferguson Jenkins and infielder Rod Carew were also induced that year.
