Personal:Graduated in 1979 from Corvallis (OR) H.S., where he was an All-State wide receiver and defensive back, as well as an All-State infielder. Attended San Diego State University for one semester before transferring to Canada (CA) J.C.

In 1990 he received the Daily Point of Light Award from President Bush. This was the first athlete to be honored. During his career he also received other humanitarian awards including:
