The Cardinals keep on pounding away at the opposing teams pitchers just demolishing their confidence hitting back-to-back home runs left and right. The Cardinals hit 4 homers in today's game against Houston getting their first real test winning 8-7. Dave Veres had his real test as the closer only having a one run lead going into the 9th. Veres handled the first two batters without any trouble, then hit Alou, then a pinch runner was thrown out by Matheny trying to steal 2nd to end the game. Mike Matheny has been doing great with the bat and on the field, he threw out two would be stealers in the game. The Cardinals took an early lead with a home run by Big Mac that scored Edgar Renteria. Then in the 3rd the Cards got back-to-back home runs by Renteria and Lankford, both of which are their second on the season. Jim Edmonds has been a great pick-up thus far in the season. He went 4-for-4 reaching base 5 straight time with two doubles, two singles, a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base. J.D. Drew has been taking charge in the home run department hitting 4 out in just 11 at bats. He has been showing power to all fields with a 400+ foot home run in the 8th that help the Cards get their needed run support. Pat Hentgen pitched well only giving up 4 hits, but 3 of those were solo home runs. He went into the 7th but failed to retire a batter. The bullpen has been getting a work out. Slocumb pitched in his 3rd straight game coming in to relieve for Mohler. Those two allowed 4 runs to score in the 8th. But Veres and Matheny shut down the Astros in the 9th to make it final...St. Louis 8...Houston 7...in the words of Mr. Buck, "That's a winner!"
