NOTES FROM DARRYLL

Hi David,

Farr-Better, Missing Link (formally Spaghetti Factory) and

Farr-Away (Formally Bolero), were all raced at the Sandringham Yacht Club in Victoria. All 5 740s in WSSC still have the original, metal, hull numbered identification plates fitted.

My boat Farr-Better was owned by Chris Carlise, before being sent to the Sailing Scene in Sydney for sale and from where I bought it.

Farr2Sirius was the 1st and original Farr740 to arrive in Australia and was raced in Queensland before coming to WA and spent a number of years in a shed at Pinjarra, a small country town south of Perth, from where Gerry bought it. Gerry can fill you in on the previous name.

This boat also featured in a dramatic sea rescue off Jurian bay in a severe storm whilst Gerry and two other skippers were returning to Fremantle from the Abrolis Islands off-shore from Geralton. This was written up, complete with photos, in the Western Fisheries magazine. I have sailed Farr Better to Busselton and

Cape Naturist on two occasions. Once in company with Farr Away and 7 other WSSC trailable boats. Once with the Brian Thompson previous owner of Farr Away and Ken Gardener off Safarri.

On another occasion a group of owners trailed down south.

I am a past Commodore of WSSC and also past chairman of

The Trailable Yacht Committee of YAWA.

I have raced competitively since 1956 and am still learning.

Darryll Rettallack

Additional information supplied by Chris Linck - "Darryll Retallack broke his mast and replaced it with a soling mast section this use no check stays and was done by Taska sails in Fremantle"
Gerry Gibson had done the same some years prior, for a boat that has been pichpoled in a storm with out damage, apparently all on board could not speak for an hour after the ride of their life, it has held up well.
