Winterlude, beautifully customised interior and powerful new rig!
Winterlude was launched in March 1982. She was fully imported from New Zealand by Dr. Maguire from Bowen, North Queensland. Winterlude was raced competitively during the next 12 months. Whilst competing in the J.O.G. titles in Hervey Bay, Winterlude was dismasted. She was trailed back to Bowen and sold.
Peter Broadhurst from Mackay purchased Winterlude in 1983 with a broken mast. A new mast was imported from New Zealand which took 8 weeks. Peter raced the boat considerably over the next 13 years, successfully competing in various Qld J.O.G. titles, taking out the North Qld J.O.G. series in 1987. He also competed in various Whitsunday Offshore Yacht Racing circuits, raced from the ports of Hamilton Island, Mackay, Bowen and Airlie Beach over 3 weekends, winning a number of legs over the years. He sailed in the Yeppoon to Mackay Offshore race of 260 nm, where Winterlude was 4th on handicap, and the first boat under 30 feet around High Peak Island about 40 nm off the Queensland coast.
Winterlude with Peter Broadhurst as skipper was Club Champion twice for both inshore and offshore series.
After selling Winterlude, Peter purchased a Farr 940 (Noelex 30), a “bigger and faster” boat. Racing up to the windward mark, Winterlude is still breathing down his neck, haunting him.
Dale Bradford bought Winterlude in 1996, and continued to successfully compete in club races, Whitsunday Offshore Yacht Racing circuits, Bay to Bay, Laguna Quays Boaties Weekend where Winterlude took line honours and was placed second on handicap. When the mast was damaged in 1999, it was replaced with a Ross 780 rig (slightly modified). This has made the boat more user friendly and can be de-rigged easily with 2 people and trailed to various events or holiday destinations. Since refitting the boat inside, it is now also a comfortable cruising boat which is a bonus since Mackay has numerous uninhabitated islands within 2 to 5 hours sailing. The boat is now very versatile, racing one weekend with 3 grunts on the rails, and cruising the next weekend with 3 kids in the large cockpit.
