DALLAS 3, ANAHEIM 1
DALLAS (AP) - The Stars overcame the absence of top scorer Brett
Hull. The Mighty Ducks of Anaheim weren't able to muster a shot
in the first period without Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne.
Third-line center Shaun Van Allen scored twice as Dallas extended
its winning streak to three games by beating Anaheim 3-1
Wednesday night.
"It's been a long time," said Van Allen, whose last two-goal game
came in 1997, for the Ottawa Senators. "And I've never had three,
except in the minors. We were able to keep things simple and
create some chances."
Hull is day-to-day because of bruised ribs. Anaheim's Kariya is
out with a cracked bone in his right foot, while Selanne has a
groin strain.
Van Allen, signed as a free agent from Ottawa in the offseason,
has had trouble breaking into the Stars' lineup, playing in only
14 of the team's 35 games. He missed six games due to injuries,
and coach Ken Hitchcock made him a healthy scratch 15 times.
Now Van Allen better understands the Stars' system, and he has
played in six straight games. Van Allen has three goals and an
assist in his last two outings. Skating on a checking line with
gritty left wing Mike Keane has been a plus for Van Allen.
"It sometimes takes a while to get into a groove," Hitchcock
said. "And Keane is a catalyst. He boosts people up. There's good
chemistry there."
Dallas got two assists from Keane and a third-period goal from
Jere Lehtinen to extend the lead to 3-1 with 10:09 to play.
Stars rookie goalie Marty Turco gave starter Ed Belfour the night
off and finished with 19 saves, including a spectacular stop on
Anaheim's Dan Bylsma with 10:45 left to preserve a 2-1 lead.
German Titov scored the only goal for Anaheim, which lost its
fourth straight.
Anaheim did not have a shot in the first period, the first time
in franchise history the Mighty Ducks have gone without a shot in
any period. Dallas took a 1-0 first-period lead on Van Allen's
first goal.
"We had a lot of shots, they just didn't get through," said
Anaheim coach Guy Charron. "We kept hitting shin pads, and that's
partly our fault. We've got to get shots at the net. In a one- or
two-goal game against one of the top defensive teams in the
league, you're not going to get that many opportunities so you
have to take advantage of them."
