DALLAS 1, ANAHEIM 0
ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- In the last game of a five-game
road trip, the Dallas Stars did just enough.
Ed Belfour stopped 29 shots for his league-leading seventh
shutout and Grant Marshall scored 5:26 into the game to give the
Stars a 1-0 victory over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.
"I had a pretty good bead on the puck tonight," Belfour said. "I
don't think they Ducks) had that many second chances. ... I'm
just trying to play the same way throughout and not get nervous
about (the shutout). I put enough pressure on myself on every
game as it is."
Belfour continued his dominance of the Ducks, improving to
18-6-1 lifetime with nine shutouts against them. But he was
barely tested in racking up his 56th career shutout.
"He's a hard goalie to play against when he's got a lead going
into the third period, especially when he smells a shutout,"
Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said.
After a pair of slap shots by Paul Kariya with four minutes left
in the first period, the Mighty Ducks did little to make Belfour
work.
"When you're playing against a guy like Ed Belfour, he's going
to stop the first shot, so we've got to get more traffic to the
net to create some second and third opportunities," Kariya said.
"We had some good chances, but they played pretty tight after
they got the 1-0 lead."
The Ducks' only other scoring threat, Teemu Selanne, suffered a
slight groin pull and was not on the ice for most of the third
period.
"It's just so frustrating right now," said Selanne, who is
listed as day-to-day. "The team is struggling and this happens
to me. It's a nightmare right now. I don't even know what
happened. I didn't do much, I just turned around and I was just
trying to take off and I heard a pop."
Marshall gave Belfour all he needed early on. Former Duck Ted
Donato set up the goal when, standing in the right faceoff
circle, he pushed the puck to Marshall in the corner. Then, as
the right wing walked up into the circle, Donato charged to the
net, drawing two defenders.
Turning to back into the crease, Marshall waited and whipped a
high wrist shot past goaltender Guy Hebert for his second goal
of the season.
"Donato made a great play," Marshall said. "We knew what we
wanted to do. I was able to find the opening to get it on the
net. It was a must-win for both teams. We needed the point, so
did they."
The Stars improved to 2-2-1 on the trip and are 7-3-1 in their
last 11 games, moving within a point of first-place San Jose in
the Pacific Division.
The Mighty Ducks have had lots of problems offensively, scoring
just three times in the last four games and managing no more
than two goals in 10 of the last 11.
The offense has masked the quality of Hebert's performances. He
has stopped 117 of 122 shots over his last five games but is
just 2-3 over that span.
"They've been playing very well, they're just not getting the
breaks," Donato said of his former team.
