DALLAS 4, PHILADELPHIA 1
DALLAS (AP) - Even as he passes hockey greats, Brett Hull isn't
so sure he belongs among them. Hull scored twice to go ahead of
Mario Lemieux on the NHL's career goal list Thursday night and
lead the Dallas Stars to a 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia
Flyers.
"It's a great feeling to know you're a part of the history of the
game," Hull said. "It's something you can only dream of, to be at
that peak.
"I don't consider myself a great player. I can score goals, but I
don't look at myself at that level."
Hull's 613th goal, scored in the second period, tied him with
Lemieux in eighth place. His third-period tally and fourth this
season pushed him past the former Pittsburgh star and current
Penguins owner.
"Mario's a friend of mine so that's special," Hull said. "We've
played golf and spent some time together. He's a real gentleman
and I consider it a privilege to be mentioned along with him."
With regular center Mike Modano out with a lower back strain,
Hull played on a line centered by Joe Nieuwendyk. Jere Lehtinen,
playing the left side, had a goal and an assist.
Ed Belfour made 26 saves for the Stars, off to a 2-2-1 start.
Simon Gagne scored a second-period goal for the Flyers, 1-2-1
after reaching last season's Eastern Conference Finals.
Dallas took a 1-0 lead at 11:45 of the first period on Lehtinen's
deflection, his first goal of the season. Hull was alone in front
of the net to knock in the rebound of Lehtinen's shot and make it
2-0 at 1:41 of the second.
Gagne's backhand at 9:09 of the middle period reduced Dallas'
lead to 2-1. Philadelphia dominated the period with a 15-7 shots
advantage, but the Flyers could beat Belfour only once.
Hull's one-timer from the left circle at 5:42 of the final
period, as a Flyers penalty expired, gave the Stars a 3-1 lead.
Flyers coach Craig Ramsay said Hull's second goal broke his
team's spirit.
"I thought we played a great second period," Ramsay said. "We put
the pressure on them and had some more chances. But that third
goal killed us. That made it tough for us to come back."
Brenden Morrow added an empty-net goal for Dallas with 1:26 left.
Flyers left wing John LeClair missed the game due to back spasms.
Also missing for Philadelphia was right wing Mark Recchi with a
possible concussion and a foot injury.
Stars center Jamie Langenbrunner missed the game to be with his
wife, who had a baby earlier Thursday.
