CAROLINA 5, DALLAS 2
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Carolina's new style got some major
reinforcement Tuesday night. Rod Brind'Amour and Bates Battaglia
scored four minutes apart early in a three-goal second period as
the Hurricanes beat the Dallas Stars 5-2.
"This proves to everybody in this room that we can play our open
style, but still not be ridiculous about it and be smart in our
own end," said Jeff O'Neill, who scored Carolina's first goal.
Sandis Ozolinsh added a short-handed goal late in the second as
Carolina defeated goalie Marty Turco, who was making his NHL
debut while the Stars rested Ed Belfour.
The defending Western Conference champions were sluggish
following Monday night's victory at Toronto and are off to a
1-2-1 start, scoring just eight goals.
"I think they are a little bit tired. Those guys are champions
over there, but we kind of jumped on them," O'Neill said. "The
kid in net got hung out to dry a little bit. But they've won
enough times, so tough for them."
Brett Hull's 612th career goal late in the second was one of the
few bright spots for Dallas, which went 0-for-7 on the power
play.
"There is none," Hull said when asked about his team's offense.
"We'd better pick it up. It's not good enough. We've changed a
few things, but it doesn't matter. There's no excuse. You have to
score."
Carolina led 1-0 before Brind'Amour scored his first of the
season off a pass from Sami Kapanen, who took a shot on Turco,
got the rebound and slipped it to a wide open Brind'Amour.
Battaglia, promoted to the top line following a season-opening
3-3 tie against Washington on Saturday night, then scored off a
perfect pass from Ron Francis on a 2-on-1 to make it 3-0.
"You can't give up four 2-on-1 goals, especially with a kid who's
playing in his first NHL game," Hull said.
Francis also assisted on Carolina's first goal, giving him 1,089
career assists. Mike Keane of Dallas and Tommy Westlund of
Carolina added third-period goals.
The Hurricanes pelted Turco, the former University of Michigan
star who holds the NCAA record for wins at 127, with 13
first-period shots. Twice he gave the Hurricanes a two-man
advantage when he flipped pucks into the crowd without it
touching the glass, which resulted in a pair of delay-of-game
minors. However, Carolina's power play was 0-for-3 before O'Neill
got his first of the season.
