DALLAS 2, CALGARY 0
CALGARY, Alberta (AP) - With a week remaining in the regular
season, the Dallas Stars appear prepared for the playoffs.
Dallas rookie Marty Turco made 27 saves for his third shutout as
the Stars stretched their unbeaten streak to 10 games with a 2-0
win over the Calgary Flames on Saturday night. Dallas has
outscored the opposition 34-10 during its streak and has yielded
no more than one goal in all but one of the games.
"Our team is building something pretty solid right now, and we'd
like to keep it going right into the playoffs," said Joe
Nieuwendyk, who scored the first Dallas goal. "We don't want to
have any dips in our game because you take one night off, it
makes it that much harder to get the momentum back."
Mike Modano also scored for Dallas, which moved within four
points of the Detroit Red Wings in the race for second place in
the Western Conference.
Dallas has eight wins and two ties during its unbeaten streak,
the team's longest unbeaten string since a 15-game stretch from
Dec. 6, 1998, to Jan. 6, 1999.
Turco said the team knows how important it is to maintain focus
-- and keep playing well.
"They're always talking about it and you can tell it means
something to them," Turco said. "They've all been on good teams
that weren't playing well going into the playoffs and they've all
been on teams that were around .500 but on a roll entering the
playoffs. And in years past, it's the teams on a roll that
usually do well, so we want to keep this going."
Turco has won his last four starts during which he has two
shutouts, a 0.50 goals-against average and a .980 save
percentage. Turco made a couple of key stops early in the third,
stopping Toni Lydman and Denis Gauthier as the Flames pressed to
get back into it.
"It's nice to get out there and play well for the team, just in
case anything happens to Eddie (Belfour)," Turco said. "My job's
pretty easy. Just get out there when they ask me to and it's been
fun all year."
The Flames have been shut out twice in a row at home. With one
home game left, the Flames have 12 home wins and are assured of
finishing with its lowest home win total in franchise history.
"We've been getting our chances, but the puck's just not going in
the net for us right now. It's frustrating," Flames center Craig
Conroy said. "The puck is going right through the crease and out
the other side. Guys are whacking it, but it's going anywhere but
in the net."
