DALLAS 1, PHOENIX 1 (OT)
DALLAS (AP) - One point was enough to satisfy the Dallas Stars
and Phoenix Coyotes.
Mike Modano scored for Dallas midway through the second period as
the Stars tied Phoenix 1-1 Friday night. Travis Green scored
earlier in the period for The Coyotes. The tie helped the
first-place Stars stretch their Pacific Division advantage over
second-place San Jose to four points.
"We're just trying to get some breathing room between us and San
Jose," said Modano, who has nine goals and 13 assists in his last
17 games. "But it was a sloppy game. Both teams had trouble
getting out of their own zones and there wasn't much flow to the
game."
Phoenix, clinging to the eighth and final Western Conference
playoff spot, stretched its lead over ninth-place Los Angeles to
four points. The Coyotes are playing basic hockey, at least until
the players acquired in three recent trades get used to their new
teammates.
"We're not here to impress anybody," Phoenix coach Bob Francis
said. "The encouraging thing is we got a big point. This is how
we're going to have to play if we want to succeed."
Dallas had a two minute power play in the overtime and outshot
Phoenix in the extra period. Coyotes goalie Sean Burke stopped
six shots in overtime to preserve the tie.
Burke stopped 25 shots for the Coyotes, who are 2-1-2 in their
last five games. Burke came up with a glove save on Ted Donato
with 36 seconds remaining in overtime.
"We had to be boring and not make mistakes," said Burke. "In
overtime, we really wanted the two points and I was just trying
to make saves to give us a chance to get the two points."
Phoenix took a 1-0 lead at 2:56 of the second period on Green's
goal that struck two players on the way into the net. Todd
Simpson's shot from the point hit Dallas' Brenden Morrow. The
shot then deflected off the stick of Green and past Stars goalie
Ed Belfour. The goal was Green's 10th of the season.
Dallas tied the game at 10:56 of the second period when Modano
collected a rebound and flipped the puck over Burke for his 26th
goal of the season.
Belfour had 21 saves for Dallas, which is 4-2-1 in its last seven
games. Belfour made a glove save on Jeremy Roenick with 2 seconds
left in regulation. Belfour was impressed with Burke's
performance.
"We had more chances, but Sean was on his game and made some nice
saves," said Belfour.
