DALLAS 3, ST. LOUIS 3 (OT)
DALLAS (AP) - The slumping Dallas Stars are looking to start a
streak that would push them up the Western Conference standings.
They think the point from Sunday night's 3-3 tie with the Central
Division-leading St. Louis Blues might provide that spark.
Sergei Zubov scored Dallas' third power-play goal of the game
with 11:36 left in regulation as the Stars rallied from a
two-goal deficit for a 3-3 tie.
"To come back from 3-1 against this team is excellent," Stars
coach Ken Hitchcock said. "St. Louis is on a roll, they play a
terrific team game, so for us it's a good tie."
The Stars bounced back from Friday night's 2-1 home loss to
expansion Minnesota, but Dallas is only 2-4-1 in its last seven
games.
"It was a good rebound game," said Stars center Mike Modano, who
had a goal and an assist. "In the past, we've been good at
regrouping after bad games. This was a good comeback against a
good team."
St. Louis, 3-1-3 in its last seven games, had the best scoring
opportunity 30 seconds into overtime, but Scott Young's shot hit
the goalpost. An overtime victory over Dallas coupled with
Saturday night's 4-3 overtime win at Colorado would have been a
major confidence boost for the Blues.
"It's too bad, but I had a chance," Young said. "It definitely
would have made it a great weekend."
The Blues came back from a 1-0 deficit behind consecutive
second-period goals by Pierre Turgeon, Scott Mellanby and Jochen
Hecht to take a 3-1 lead. Mellanby was acquired in a trade with
the Florida Panthers on Friday and was making his Blues debut.
But Dallas got close on a power-play goal from Joe Nieuwendyk at
16:21 of the second. Zubov tied it at 3 with his seventh goal of
the season on a slap shot from the right point that got past
Blues goalie Roman Turek, the former Stars backup, who was
screened on the play. Turek, who had missed the three previous
games with an elbow injury, finished with 20 saves, but allowing
three power-play goals took some of the luster off of the tie.
"The Stars are tough on the power play," Turek said. "They have
two guys in front of the net to cause deflections. It's very hard
to stop shots when you're screened."
