LOS ANGELES 8, DALLAS 0
LOS ANGELES (AP) - After one of the most lopsided victories in
franchise history, the Los Angeles Kings promised to treat it
just like any of their ugliest losses. They're going to put it
behind them as quickly as possible.
Luc Robitaille scored twice Tuesday night during an 8-0 route of
the Dallas Stars, helping the Kings snap out of an offensive
slump during which they scored just once in their previous three
games.
"When we show our video clips tomorrow, we won't look at any
goals -- just the defensive situations and how we stopped them,"
Kings coach Andy Murray said. "That's what's going to get the
wins for us, and that's what we want to focus on."
Jamie Storr's 10th career shutout and third this season matched
the most lopsided shutout victory in Kings history. They also
beat Vancouver by the same score on Feb. 24, 1983, behind Markus
Mattsson, and did likewise to Toronto on Jan. 23, 1975, behind
Rogie Vachon.
Rob Blake capitalized on a two-man advantage with his 17th goal,
the most among NHL defensemen. Ziggy Palffy, Jozef Stumpel,
Nelson Emerson, Steven Reinprecht and Ian Laperriere also scored
for the Kings, helping end their three-game losing streak.
The Kings scored on three of their first nine shots against
two-time Vezina Trophy winner Ed Belfour, who has lost his last
three starts while surrendering 15 goals on 79 shots. He allowed
all eight goals Thursday on 36 shots.
"We didn't just turn it on," Blake said. "I mean, take a look at
the shots we had against Minnesota and Calgary and Minnesota. We
had opportunities, but the puck just didn't go in the net for us.
Tonight it did, but we didn't play any differently."
Los Angeles is 5-1-0 in its last six against Dallas, after going
0-16-6 in the previous 22. It is the first time the Kings beat
the injury-riddled Stars three times in the same season since
1990-91, three seasons before the franchise moved to Dallas from
Minnesota.
"We just have to find a way to get back to the basics and find a
way to stay in these games," Mike Modano said following the
Stars' worst defeat since leaving the Twin Cities. "When we get
behind, we start doubting ourselves as a team, and second-guess
our decision making. And that didn't used to be the case before."
Just moments before stumpel opened the scoring at 2:20 of the
first, Storr robbed Grant Marshall with a diving glove stop for
one of his 23 saves.
"That was a huge save for us, and that's what we need from
Jamie," Laperriere said. "You feed off of that kind of save. It
tells us that Jamie is in the game, so you want to work hard for
him."
