PHOENIX 5, DALLAS 2
PHOENIX (AP) - Finally, Phoenix actually had a home-ice advantage
against the Dallas Stars.
The Coyotes scored four goals in the second period, three in a
span of just over three minutes, to beat Dallas 5-2 Sunday night,
Phoenix's first win over the Stars at America West Arena in six
tries. Dallas was 4-0-1 in its last five games in Phoenix, and
hadn't lost at America West Arena since March 17, 1999.
"I think they were standing around. That's not usually the Dallas
team we play against," said Keith Tkachuk, who had a goal and two
assists. "They were turning the puck over, we were jumping on it
and we were getting it in. To score that many goals against them
in one period is amazing."
Daniel Briere scored for the sixth game in a row for the Coyotes,
the longest scoring streak in the NHL this season. It's been a
remarkable performance for a player who admitted he was
frightened when he was recalled from Springfield of the American
Hockey League Jan. 7.
"I wasn't confident. I was scared to go on the ice," said Briere,
who has seven goals in six games. "I didn't want the puck. That's
the difference right now in my game. I want to have the puck. I
want to create and make plays and shoot."
Stan Neckar, Teppo Numminen and Landon Wilson also scored for the
Coyotes against Stars goalie Ed Belfour, who has allowed 10 goals
in his last two games, 13 in his last three.
"We're not good enough defensively right now," Dallas coach Ken
Hitchcock said. "Some of it is goaltending, some of it is
defensive play, some if it is strong puck work."
Sean Burke had 22 saves and Jeremy Roenick had three assists for
the Coyotes, who outshot Dallas 30-24.
"There's not much to complain about in tonight's effort," Phoenix
coach Bob Francis said.
The Coyotes scored twice in a 37-second span in the second
period. After Dallas cut Phoenix's lead to 2-1 on Brenden
Morrow's power-play goal at 10:27 of the second period, Phoenix
quickly regained command. Numminen scored his fourth goal of the
season on a pass from Roenick to make it 3-1 at 16:22. Wilson
raced down the ice after the ensuing faceoff and scored an
unassisted goal on a slap shot, the puck slipping between
Belfour's legs.
After the Coyotes made it 5-1 on Briere's goal on an assist from
Tkachuk, Grant Marshall deflected Derian Hatcher's slap shot in
three seconds into a Dallas power play to cut the lead to 5-2 at
11:07 of the third period.
