Materials Needed:
Vanilla Wafers
Tubes of Red and Yellow Icing
Flaked coconut (tinted green)
Miniature peppermint patties
Procedure:
Explain the importance of the assembly line and how the assembly line revolutionized manufacturing
Split the class into two teams, one team will work as an assembly line, and the other will work individually to create hamburgers
Split the materials so that each team has vanilla wafers, icing, coconut and peppermint patties
Tell the class that there will be a race to see which team can make the 20 hamburgers in the fastest time.
Explain that that the assembly line needs to create a division of labor so that everyone has a job, and will work together to get the hamburgers completed
Explain to the individuals that each person must make "x" amount of hamburgers, by themselves, no help from their neighbors
Set them off and making the candy hamburgers
Evaluation:
Discuss who won the race (it should be the assembly line)
Discuss why the assembly line was quicker then individual workers
Discuss advantages and disadvantages of both the assembly line and individual workers
