Game 7 Summary: Vienna 65 Fairfax 23

July 14, 1998 - The Vienna Warhawks 12 Year Old Boys County Select Team beat Fairfax 65-23 in the Fairfax County Summer Basketball League at Luther Jackson Middle School.

After losing three straight games, Vienna took its frustration out on Fairfax by applying constant defensive pressure. The Warhawks started out in a 1-3-1 full court press and stayed with it the entire first half. Vienna rotated a new set of five players in the game every four minutes to keep everyone fresh. This took its toll on Fairfax, with Vienna taking a commanding 27-12 lead at the half.

In the second half, Vienna backed off the full court press and went with a half court man-to-man defense. The Warhawks continued to rotate new players in every four minutes. The defense created the turnovers that became immediate scoring opportunities. Everyone of the twelve Vienna players scored and only player, Kwame Safo, scored in double figures with 11 points. Now that’s the kind of balance you want to see in a game with everyone getting into the action both offensively and defensively.

The Warhawks went on to score 38 second half points to win by the final 65 to 23 margin. The key to the game was Vienna’s ability to provide suffocating pressure while controlling the boards.

The guards, Brock Boone, Brian Landry, Jeff Manthe, Stuart Rawlinson, and Kwame Safo did an excellent job of putting the pressure on up front so Fairfax didn’t even have a chance to get into their usual offensive set. Vienna’s big men, Ryan Boyer, Brendan Hanifin, Brent Locey, Chris McNerney, Daniel Pitcher, Sawyer Sams, and Ray Sparrow controlled the boards and provided the scoring punch needed to cruise in this one.

The Warhawks play three games next week. Each game is important in deciding where Vienna will be seeded in the league’s upcoming single elimination tournament August 3-7. If the Warhawks can play next week like they did last night, they might have a chance to win all three games next week, giving them a high seeding in the tournament. Go Warhawks!
