Game 11 Summary: Vienna 57 Southwest 49

August 4, 1998 - The Vienna Warhawks 12 Year Old Boys County Select Team won their fifth straight game by beating Southwest 57-49 in the quarter finals of the Fairfax County Summer Basketball Tournament at Thomas Jefferson High School. This will be Vienna’s third straight Final Four appearance. The Warhawks will play Chantilly at 7:15pm tonight at Oakton High School.

Vienna started out the game in a 1-3-1 full court trap that was successful the last time they played Southwest in the regular season. The Warhawks jumped out to a fast 8-0 lead that forced Southwest to call time out. Vienna kept the pressure on and increased their lead to double digits. The upfront guards of Kwame Safo, Brock Boone, and Brian Landry gave their counterparts all kinds of trouble, forcing Southwest to turn the ball over for easy Vienna baskets. The Warhawks led 30-17 at the half.

Derek Feussner put up 11 points in the half, including a 3 pointer. Stuart Rawlinson also added a 3 pointer early in the half while Vienna was building its lead.

In the second half, The Warhawks went with a 2-3 Zone most of the way.   Vienna built a 20 point lead by the middle of the half and then started to get a little crazy. Their shot selection was not the best and their defense loosened up. Southwest streaked at the end to close within 8 points, but the outcome was never in question.

Every Vienna player scored in the game. Derek Feussner led all scorers with 21 points followed by Brent Locey (9) and Kwame Safo (8).

The win improves the Warhawk’s record to 8-3 during the summer. The Game tonight against Chantilly should be an interesting one. Two heated rivals going to war with a Championship on the line. You won’t want to miss it.

Special Thanks to Mark Gentry and Brock Boone who played in their final game for the Warhawks (Couldn’t postpone vacation any longer). We’ll miss you tonight. Go Warhawks!
