Championship Game Summary
Vienna 73 Braddock Rd 53
August 7, 1998 The Vienna Warhawks 12 Year Old Boys County Select Basketball Team claimed the Fairfax County Stars Summer League Championship 73-53 over Braddock Road held at Thomas Jefferson High School. Braddock Road was looking for their first summer league title after a heartbreaking overtime loss to Chantilly in last years championship game. They lost only one game this summer and were trouncing teams as they marched through the tournament bracket. Vienna had built its own six game winning streak which included a 46-43 win against defending champion, Chantilly in the semi-finals. Vienna came out ready to play taking an early 9-0 lead. Then came Braddock Roads full court press. The Warhawks had trouble at first handling the pressure, but calmed down and worked the ball around effectively to get good looks at the basket the rest of the half. Vienna came back with a run of their own to end the half up 14 points at 39-25. Three Vienna players, Derek Feussner, Stuart Rawlinson, and Kwame Safo hit 3-point shots in the first half. Brent Locey provided an inside threat with 8 points and 8 rebounds. Guards Brian Landry, Jeff Manthe, Safo, and Rawlinson worked extremely hard on defense to prevent Braddock Road from getting easy shots from the perimeter. In the second half, Braddock Road turned up the pressure and made a run, cutting Viennas lead to 9 points with a barrage of 3-pointers. The Warhawks regrouped and started making things happen. Vienna made a couple 3 pointers of their own and Braddock Road started wearing down. The Warhawks began beating their full court pressure consistently and all Braddock Road could do is start fouling as the fatigue set in. Vienna went to the free-throw line 23 times in the second half, making 15. Feussner led all scorers with 21 points, followed by Loceys double double of 17 points and 15 rebounds. Safo also scored in double digits with 13. Rawlinson added 7 points. Ryan Boyer scored 5 and pulled down 8 rebounds. Ray Sparrow scored 4 points and had 5 rebounds. Sawyer Sams scored and pulled down 6 boards. Other team members out of town for the game were Brock Boone, Mark Gentry, Brendan Hanifin, Chris McNerney, Hugh McCarthy, and Daniel Pitcher. |
