WHAT A GREAT GAME!!!!
San Diego 3-0 Long Island!!!
And we had over 3,800 people in attendance on a night where the Padres had a home game, and the Gulls had a home game for the Taylor Cup (hockey) championship, and it threatened to rain most of the night!
Our team looks really good. Even last week with their 0-2 defeat they looked good, but tonight it really came together. Our first ever win, and our first ever shutout! Man of the Match for me was Chilean Carlos Farias. He had two of the three goals. He's really short, but was everywhere. Kinda like Cienfuegos. Everyone was passing really well, and we had lots of scoring chances. We have a huge center forward named Jerome Watson who really shook things up for their defense. Everyone had a good game!
Long Island's defense looked really bad. We were getting through lots of times. Their goalie came out of his box several times to help out. They have to be concerned about that! They did have some scoring chances as well though. But our goalie, Joe Cannon, made some spectacular saves! He was rock solid in the back. This was a great win, and everyone left feeling really good about the game, and the future of the Flash!
I'm revising my opinion about the width of the field. I was trying to defend it as being wider that people were saying last week, but I looked and the truth is that there isn't but 5 yards extra MAX on either side from where the gridiron football lines can be seen. I believe a standard gridiron field is 50 yards wide, so the soccer pitch could only be 60 yds wide at the most.
As far as my participation went, I was a bit disappointed that others from THE THUNDER didn't show up before the game. I manned the table all by myself right up until game time, and by then other people had began to sit in my section. Plus, I couldn't get to where the big drum is in time. I did go to where it was, but also there was no stick to beat it with. But I did have a bunch of airhorns, which I used often! Later, two others from THE THUNDER came to where I was sitting, so we had three, plus my wife and another friend of ours who's a big fan of futbol, and from Mexico. He said he had a great time too.
At halftime they had a very nice event, calling it a junior World Cup. Eight teams of kids, 5 on a side, played actual games during half time. Four temporary goals were set up along the sidelines of the main pitch, and so the field was divided into four smaller fields. Each team was a "country" and they played for 10 minutes. They said they're going to be doing this all season long, in a round robin tournament, then a knock-out round, to see which "country" of kids wins their "World Cup!" It was neat to see the kids playing. Some of them really showed some skill! Hopefully they can translate that into skills that will get them into more advanced play, and into the pro ranks.
And finally, several times during the game the P.A. announcer invited everyone who wanted to be a part-owner of The Flash to buy stock!
It was a great game. I sure hope this keeps up, and soccer will be here to stay! Sorry to miss the Women's National Team game in Fullerton, but I'm sure that was great too!
GO FLASH!
