I just saw the results from the USISL page, and their little recap, that said this;
Antonio Robles had a hat trick to lead the Flash back from a 2-0 first-half deficit. Jerome Watson sent a sharply-angled shot past 'keeper Freddy Estrada in the 87th minute to seal the win. Kirk Wilson had a goal and an assist for the Patriots.
So it sounds like we had a pretty interesting game! The best part is that we maintain first place in the Pacific division, ahead of Orange County. Next game is Saturday in Nashville. That will be a tough game too, as Nashville is in first place in the Central division of the Western Conference. They are ahead of us on points, and could be an opponent in the Western Conference playoffs. Hope things go well for our lads!
GO FLASH!!!
****************ADDENDUM Tue. 4 Aug 1998******************************
Last night I happen to flip around the channels at around 11:00PM, and I found the Flash - El Paso game was being shown on Channel 4! It wasn't listed in the paper, so I was really surprised! I got to watch most of the second half. The score was 0-2 against the Flash, and the Flash were looking pretty bad. Commentating was Rick Davis and someone else, I couldn't tell who. The sound was really bad on the broadcast. The crowd noise and the stadium P.A. were drowning out the commentary. But what I heard was them saying how the Flash had just played the night before, and were looking tired. As time went on, they were saying that it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that the Flash would have to settle for a split on the weekend.
But then, El Paso started playing very defensively. They weren't trying to hold possession. The Flash took advantage, and Antonio Robles took the team on his back and created a lot of chances. Things were getting real "chippy" too. Both sides were throwing elbows and pushing and shoving each other. The ref was completely out of control. He ended up giving out a lot of yellow cards, and I think El Paso got a red earlier, yet the more the ref talked to the players after each foul, the less control he seemed to have. Every player on the field was explaining himself, and the ref was listening to everyone, and arguing back. The last 10 minutes of the game seemed to go on forever!
But the Flash showed a lot of heart playing through it all, and fighting for the win. and it's worth saying that Antonio Robles was the biggest spark of all. Joe Cannon was playing in goal, so I guess he flew in from San Jose for these games. He didn't look too good out there though. He was off his line more than a few times and was almost caught for more goals. Apparently he did make an error earlier that led to one of their goals. And Michael N'Doumbe made an error late that was almost a goal, but for the great save by Joey. Nate Hetherington was on the bench in street clothes, and the comentators said he had been affected by some food poisoning. Chile Faris was playing, wearing #22, Lafe Vittatoe's old number. Lafe has gone on to Hungary to try and catch on with Ralf Wilhelm's team. But why would Chile give up #7? Jimmy Conrad had another good game. He's quickly becoming my favorite player on defense.
It was good to see the Flash on TV again. El Paso's field looked to be about as narrow as ours. And they had a pretty good crowd too. I'll have to check for the next Flash televised game, and I'll post the info here!
LET'S GO FLASH!!!
