My Game 12 Report

4-0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Flash CRUSHED the Zodiac 4-0 in front of 2,882 fans!

This was some game! Lots of World Cup influence, in that there were 3 red cards issued, 2 against the Flash. And goalie Joe Cannon maintained his shutout streak, even after the Zodiac got a penalty kick. Joe made a terrific save! In fact, the last team to score a goal against the Flash was the Zodiac, in Irvine on May 17th! The Flash got a penalty kick of their own when Lafe Vittitoe (a newly signed forward playing in his third game) got himself taken down in the penalty area. The rest of the goals looked real easy. Zodiac keeper Mike Littman had to live through a barrage of shots. The Zodiac defense just couldn't stop the attacking Flash players.

In fact, after the game was over the Zodiac were all walking away rather dejectedly right in front of where I was sitting, so of course I let them all know the score! I was yelling "FOUR - O! FOUR - O! FOUR - O!" as they headed off. Well I think I really got to Mike Littman, as he started to turn and yelled something back at me, motioning towards the field. I think he was challenging me to come out there on the field and play, or something. I couldn't hear because as I saw him yelling, I yelled even louder! Right then I thought of what the Galaxians must have done to get Brad Friedel to spit on their "Area 51" sign! I mean, come on Mike! It's part of the game, right? You win, you get the praise, you lose, especially away, you hear about it from the home fans! Am I right? My wife was with me, and she was telling me to stop, saying that they all probably felt bad enough, and I didn't need to give them any more grief. But I wasn't insulting them, I just pointed at the scoreboard and yelled four - o! Oh, I think I yelled something like, "can we play you every week?" But hey, it's part of the game, right? :-)

The Flash played really well, yet there wasn't one particular player who stood out besides Joe Cannon. Carlos "Chile" Farias is normally very good, but tonight he seemed a little off. In fact, he was subbed for later in the second half. Lafe Vittitoe wears #22 and is playing in the place of forward Jerome Watson. Lafe is a graduate of USD, and is playing for his first professional team. He's a native of Carlsbad. And being from USD, we now have at least 3 USD alumni on the team, together with Jaime Munroe and Jimmy Wang. (There may be others, but right now I can't think of them.) Jerome, it turns out, was not cut or traded, but is in France watching the World Cup! Apparently when he signed with the Flash, he told them that he had tickets to the World Cup, and he was going to go. So the Flash have let him! But they see Lafe as playing very well in Jerome's place, so we haven't lost much, if any, talent at forward.

Now we've finished our 5 game home stand, winning all 5 and not allowing any goals. The next game is on July 1st all the way in New York, against the Staten Island Vipers. After that we play at home on July 11th against Chivas of Tijuana for a little tournament they're calling Border Cup '98. We'll play Chivas in Tijuana on July 22nd, and if the series is tied, there will be a third game. That Tijuana series should be very interesting! I can't wait to go to Tijuana and be loud and obnoxious for the Flash there! Maybe I'll see first hand the infamous "water" that gets thrown at people!

It sure is a great time to be a soccer fan!

GO FLASH!!!
