The Flash beat Seattle 2-0 in front of 3,261 fans, on a night the Padres and Giants are battling for first place in the NL west. Our attendance numbers continue to impress.
The game was very impressive too! The Flash looked like they're really gelling into a great team. Seattle played a very physical game, with a lot of hard tackles and high emotions. But the Flash responded with superior performance on the field. The first goal was off of a free kick by "Chile" Farias. That free kick was awarded because of one of many numerous hard fouls the Sounders constantly were dishing out. There was a lot of heated words and pushing and shoving, but when the kick was taken just above the left corner of the penalty area, it went into the back of the net! Now THAT'S how you win an argument!
"Chile" played very well, and is clearly the orchestrator of the offense. He directs traffic while pushing forward, and has a good sense of where others are around him. The second goal was a result of Chile hitting a powerful shot right at the goalie from about 35 yards out, with Nate Hetherington rushing right by Chile. The shot was very hard, and it bounced off the goalie's chest, right in front of Nate who was there to pick up the rebound and score. Nate and Chile seem to work really well together.
Tonight we didn't have our regular forward Jerome Watson, we had another tall guy wearing #22. I'm sorry I can't recall his name. I think he made his debut last week, and this was his second game. He still seems to be getting used to the rest of the team. I saw a couple of passes where others seemed to be giving him some "constructive criticism." I wonder if this means Jerome Watson is going to be replaced. The last few weeks I've noticed that he hasn't been as productive as the rest of the team. Plus, Jerome's #9 was worn by another player. So I'll be sure to check on Jerome next week.
Seattle, as I mentioned, played a very rough game. Some notable players were #5 Brandon Prideaux. He seemed to get emotional at times, and I know *I* certainly let him know how I felt! Other notable player were #14 Jason Annicchero and #17 Patrick Beech. I believe he got a red card. and of course #22 Erik Storkson was a pretty imposing figure with his bald head and his high elbows. Personally, I feel like Seattle is the Tampa Bay Mutiny or San Jose Clash of the Pacific division, in the sense of a team of thugs.
In the stands, another good turnout of kids excited to handle the airhorns and bang on the drum. The Samba band from last week started to sit where I was, but they didn't want to sit by the airhorns. Some of them were willing to accept them, but the leader wasn't, so they moved to the other side. Oh well! I guess they're there not for the soccer, but to hear themselves play. Too bad, because I really like hearing them. I hope they continue to come. And as long as the Flash are paying them, I guess they will. I tried to tell them the airhorns were there as a personal request from the Flash president, but it didn't seem to matter to them. So I'll continue to bang on the drum in my end, surrounded by airhorns, and a bunch of enthusiastic kids!
Another bit of news for us is that we finally have our own t-shirts for the THUNDER! They look very good. Bright yellow make us stand out. And the image on the back looks very good. So we're slowly making progress!
Next week we play Orange County. If we win that one, we'll be two points ahead in first place. And with 5 wins in a row, this team is very confident. This home stand is going very well, and I hope it will translate to the road after the OC game. And, also to the Border Cup series we'll play against Chivas Tijuana. That should be a great experience, especially going to play them in Tijuana. I think we have a great team, and we could play anyone right now!
GO FLASH!!!!
