After months of waiting and getting excited for the beginning of the season, I was so happy to get up this morning and have my great soccer day all planned, so that tonight I could report to all of you the following;
Zodiac - Flash - : game cancelled
What a rip! The season opener for the Orange County Zodiac, and it was cancelled! Supposedly it was cancelled because of the weather. Hopefully it was that, and not for lack of interest! Even so, we've all seen games played in the rain, wind, snow ... the past two MLS Cup games for example. But oh well. Already in Los Angeles, I got paged from home with a message that the Flash had called me around 3:00 in the afternoon telling me the bad news. So instead, I got to watch the D.C. v Colorado game on TV at a restaurant with some other Galaxians. So it wasn't such a bad day after all. But I still would have liked to finally see the Flash play in person!
After I left the restaurant in Arcadia, I went ahead and drove to UC Irvine anyway, just to make sure this wasn't all a conspiracy against me. It wasn't. I went to UCI and found everything dark, with almost no indication that there was even going to be a game, until I got out of my car and walked over to a locked gate, and saw a rain smeared sign stating "the O.C. Zodiac game has been cancelled." Of course, that's after I finally found the place! That whole area seems pretty confusing to get to. I can't believe that a lot of regular, blue collar working families are going to load up the car and head over to UCI. It's a bit of a maze to get to, and there aren't a lot of small convenience stores or such for people to go to asking directions. I'm not familiar with Irvine, but it looks pretty white bread, and the streets don't look very pedestrian friendly, nor public transportation friendly.
Once you get there, the field looks like a high school practice field. I can't believe that the second highest division of soccer in this country plays on such a tiny and insignificant field. There has to be high school football stadiums in Orange County that would be far better than UCI. I saw only a steel frame set of bleachers on one side of the field, which I can't believe holds more than 1,000 people. Admittedly, it was dark, and I was looking over a locked fence, but I was thoroughly unimpressed with the facilities. I hope I'm not offending some Orange County fans, or even UCI fans, but I was expecting a lot more, and this was a big disappointment on top of the fact the game was cancelled. I will be very interested in the attendance figures from the Zodiac this season. I can't see them having much more than the players families and personal friends, plus a few more diehard (and I mean HARD) fans. I hope I'm wrong.
And I sure hope I'm not even more disappointed next week at our own home opener!
