TIJUANA -- Eduardo Medina scored in the 88th minute to give Chivas Tijuana a 2-1 victory over the Flash and the championship of the inaugural Border Cup before 1,421 last night at Chivas Stadium.
Tijuana swept the two-game exhibition series, beating San Diego 2-0 on July 11 in the opening game of the series at Southwestern College's Devore Stadium.
Last night, the Flash jumped to a quick lead when Antonio Robles scored in the second minute on a pass from Lafe Vittitoe. But Chivas tied the score on a header in the 13th minute by Manuel Artega, who was named series MVP after scoring two goals.
The Flash juggled its lineup, resting starters Kevin Legg, Eric Chaisongkram, Nate Hetherington and Michael N'Doumbe and playing without Jerome Watson and Jaime Munro, who were serving red card suspensions.
"We played a very good Chivas Tijuana team and (we) came out and played a very good game considering we had some starters not playing," said Flash coach Costa Skouras. "The second team stepped up and played very well."
Off the field, Flash goalkeeper Joe Cannon was called up to Major League Soccer by the San Jose Clash yesterday. His stint with the Clash begins Sunday and is to continue through Aug. 9. He will not miss any Flash games during that time, according to the A-League team. Last night, Cannon played forward.
Cannon, who joined the Flash in April after spending the preseason in the Clash's camp, is the first Flash player to be called up by an MLS team.
Former USD standout Tom Tate is the Flash's backup goalkeeper and has played in two games, including last night's.
The Flash returns to A-League play tomorrow against the U.S. Pro 40 Select Team and Sunday against the Mexican first division team Necaxa. Both games begin at 7:30 at Devore Stadium.
