Robles carries Flash above .500 mark

CHULA VISTA -- It has yet to take on mythical proportions, but any winning streak has to start somewhere.

Caught in a roller-coaster season that has seen the team alternate between winning and losing through eight games, the Flash put together consecutive victories for the first time last night with a 3-0 A-League win over the San Francisco Bay Seals.

Before an announced crowd of 3,143 at Southwestern College's Devore Stadium, the Flash (5-4), paced by two goals from forward Antonio Robles, moved past the .500 mark for the first time.

"It was important for us to get off this win one, lose one, but even more important was the way in which we won," said Flash coach Ralf Wilhelms. "We finished our chances well and played good technical soccer. It was a good performance."

Robles, a former member of the Continental Indoor Soccer League's La Raza de Monterrey, scored twice in nine minutes, narrowly missing a third goal when he hit the goalpost in the 54th minute.

"Tonight was my turn," Robles said. "I just hope it keeps going like that in every game. It's just a matter of working together and everybody having more of an understanding of what their roles are. Every time we go out it feels more and more like a team that's starting to play together."

Defender Jimmy Conrad, who began his collegiate career at San Diego State before transferring to UCLA, gave the Flash a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute when he scored on a header off a free kick by Carlos Farias.

The rest of the evening belonged to Robles, who made it 2-0 in the 52nd minute and found the net again off an assist from former Socker Alan Legg in the 61st minute.

"Antonio had opportunities in the prior games and he didn't finish them," Wilhelms said. "I think it was just a matter of time before the net started popping open.

"Now what we have to see is whether he's capable of consistenly scoring goals. But, obviously, I was very happy for him tonight."

Flash goalkeeper Joseph Cannon recorded his fourth shutout of the season, tying him for the league lead with Rochester's Pat Onstad and Nashville's Randy Dedini.

The Flash's next game is a week from tonight at home against Orange County.
