Flash clears up title race with win in Salinas fog

Special to the Union-Tribune

SALINAS -- The fog rolled in at a chilly Salinas Sports Complex last night, but it didn't stop the Flash from rolling out the chilled champagne to celebrate the team's Western Conference championship after a 4-1 win over defending league and conference champion California.

The Flash's Jamie Munro scored his first goal of the season, a shot from 8 yards out that deflected off Jaguars defender Rick Iverson, in the ninth minute to give the team a rare early lead in front of a crowd of 762.

California (6-21) tied it at 1-1 in the 49th minute, but Mauricio Alegre scored the first of his two goals in the 57th minute, streaking down the right side on a breakaway and hitting the lower left of the goal to put the Flash ahead to stay.

Nate Hetherington scored his seventh goal of the year from 10 yards out in the 73rd minute, and Alegre finished the Flash's scoring with a goal in the 85th minute.
