NEW YORK -- On Tuesday, Flash coach Ralf Wilhelms said his major concern about his team's upcoming game against the Staten Island Vipers was the artificial turf his team would encounter at Tottenville Stadium.
Turns out, that would be the least of his worries.
The Flash lost to Staten Island 2-1 last night before 1,878 on a hot, humid New York evening.
The tiebreaking goal came in the 58th minute when San Diego defender Jamie Munro inadvertently deflected a pass into the net past Flash goalkeeper Joe Cannon. The own goal occurred when the Vipers (5-5) were on a two-on-one breakaway.
Cannon's shutout streak had ended at 491 minutes when Staten Island's Flavio Ferri scored in the 41st minute.
The Flash (8-5) tied the score two minutes later when Antonio Robles got his team-leading fourth goal, on an assist from Carlos Farias. Robles has at least one point in four of the last five games.
San Diego outshot Staten Island 15-10. Vipers goalkeeper Peter Pappas lowered his goals-against average to 0.70.
The Flash's next match will be the inaugural Border Cup '98 against Chivas Tijuana, July 11 at Southwestern College's Devore Stadium. The team's next A-League game is July 15 against Staten Island at Devore Stadium.
