Midfielder P.J. Polowski scored in the 72nd minute to end a scoreless tie and help the Orange County Zodiac to a 2-0 A-League victory over the Flash yesterday before 355 at UC Irvine.
Polowski scored unassisted from 25 yards on a deflection. Eddie Soto, the league's No. 3 scorer, added a goal for the Zodiac (6-3) at the 90th minute to seal the outcome in the teams' first meeting. The Flash fell to 3-4.
Zodiac goalkeeper Mike Littman, who entered the game with a 1.22 goals-against average, had to make only two saves on nine Flash shots, including three by Kevin Legg. Flash goalkeeper Joe Cannon made three saves on 16 shots.
Flash forward Brad Smith, filling in for regular starter Carlos Farias, was red-carded in the 17th minute after getting his second yellow card for kicking the Zodiac's Peter Lak. The Flash was forced to play the rest of the game a man short.
Because of the ejection, Smith must sit out May 29 when the Flash hosts San Francisco.
The Flash returns home for a game against Vancouver on Friday at Southwestern College's Devore Stadium. The Flash defeated the 86ers 3-2 in overtime May 6 in Vancouver.
