On the heels of a very successful first season, the 10-U Blackhawks are looking forward to a new spring season in Allaire. They will be defending their championship title against an expanded 10-U league that has grown to thirteen teams. The team has two new players, and lost two players from last season. Joining the team are Steven Alfano from the 8-U Champion Blackhawks, and Matthew Beaton who is new to the Blackhawks organization. They are strong players and will certainly make a positive contribution to the team. We were fortunate to get such good players to join us, and we wish them the best of luck in their debuts.
Our best wishes also to Scott Micallef who is not returning, and to Billy Schweer who will be wearing a cast for the next several weeks (get well soon, Billy). We’ll miss you both. The team will face some tough competition over the next ten games. Every other team will be looking to beat the champs, so every game will be a challenge. But the Blackhawks are a great team made up of gutsy competitors with a lot of heart, and we’re sure they’ll handle themselves well in their sophomore season.
Coaches Victor Mastronardi, Alan Moskowitz and Steve Alfano did a terrific job last season and they’ve got a great group of kids this season. We’re sure to be successful with such an outstanding coaching staff and fine collection of young players. LET’S GO, BLACKHAWKS!!!
Game 1 - Blackhawks 4, Jaguars 2
The 10-U Blackhawks successfully began the defense of their title in the spring season opener by beating a very strong Jaguars team 4-2. This was a re-match of last season’s championship game, and the Jags would not go down easily. But the Blackhawks once again played tough, gritty hockey and their hustle and determination eventually paid off. It was another great game to watch and kept the fans riveted to the very end.
The first period was the usual battle when these two teams meet. Each offense was working hard, and each defense was working even harder. The Blackhawks had more scoring opportunities in this period (and throughout the game), but the Jaguars goalie did a sensational job of keeping the puck out of the net. Our team defense was again stifling and allowed very few opportunities for shots. The few shots that did get through were handled expertly by JR King as he shut out the Jaguars potent offense. Finally, late in the first, Stephen Kezel (1 goal) took a pass from Matt Bosy (2 assists) and sped into the offensive zone. He stick-handled past the defense and put a perfect wrist shot past the goalie to put the Blackhawks up 1-0. The first period ended that way, but there was a lot more action to come.
The Blackhawks defense did a great job of clearing the puck up front to the forwards all game long. We had many break-away opportunities, but the Jags goalie managed to stop most of them. We knew that our only chance was to put as many shots on goal as we could and hope that some would find their way in. The Jaguars tied it at one each early in the second period, and the game got even tougher (if that’s possible). About mid-way through the second, the Blackhawks were called for a tripping penalty, but that didn’t stop the Maddalena brothers. The defense cleared the puck, and Albert Maddalena (1 goal) fought for it. He dumped the puck deep into the offensive zone and raced up ice with his brother, Andrew Maddalena (1 assist). Andrew got to the puck first and Albert positioned himself in front of the net. Andrew sent a perfect feed to Albert, and Albert banged in a short-handed goal to give the Blackhawks a 2-1 lead. But later in the period, the Blackhawks were called for another penalty. The defense held firm for most of the penalty-kill, but the Jaguars were working furiously in our zone and finally knocked one in to tie it at 2-2 with five seconds left in the period.
Here we were again…a tie game with one period left. It all came down to the last fifteen minutes of play. The Blackhawks defense stepped it up a notch and were able to keep the Jaguars from scoring. The Jaguars really put the pressure on, but JR had a great period and stopped everything they threw at him. At last, we took the lead for good when Marc Moskowitz (2 goals) took the clearing attempt from his defense and dashed to the net. The Jags goalie had stopped Marc on many previous break-aways, making great saves by coming aggressively out of the net to challenge him. But Marc was determined to score, and refused to be denied this time. He deked right, deked left, then went back to his right and lifted it past the goalie’s glove side for a 3-2 Blackhawks lead. The team defense held firm and kept us on top. The scoring was completed when Matt Bosy and Marc Moskowitz teamed up for a two-on-none break. Matt took the puck in on the left side and brought it all the way down. He held it to the very end and had the goalie thinking shot the whole time. Then, at the last instant, he fed it across the slot to the right side where Marc one-timed it into the open net and put us up 4-2. That was a great play, and shows how the team is working together as a unit.
The Blackhawks offense worked well in this game and out-shot the Jaguars by more than two to one. Matt Beaton, Steven Alfano, Stephen Bertolino and Travis Mascitelli all had solid games and worked the puck effectively. They passed well and set up good scoring opportunities. Anthony Mastronardi, Ryan Quinn, Alan Barnstead, Andrew and Marc all played outstanding defensive games and were key to this victory. Any time you can keep an offensive powerhouse like that to two goals, you’ve done an excellent job. JR King seems to get better with each game and made some key saves to keep the game in our hands. Great job, guys.
The coaches continue their work with the kids and the team is responding in fashion. They just get better, tougher, faster and hungrier with each game. Good luck next game on Sunday, April 16th at 10:00am against the Solar Bears “B”.
