OLYMPIAD   TRIALS

Results from Karachi

First Segment of the National Trials to select a team for the Bridge Olympiad concluded Sunday, April 23, 2000. Five teams Attackers, Free Bidders, Saints, Subhanis and Four Bidders have been qualified to play the second segment against five prequalified teams, Giants, Spectrum, Candyland, Peek Freans and Pak Cables.

Excerpt from email from Azwerul Haque to Zia on evening of 2nd May:

We have just concluded the Finals of the National Trials which was held at Avari Hotel, Lahore.

OPEN:

Al Fateh from Lahore comprising of Javed Khalid, Mirza Shauq Hussain, Mrs.Fehmina Shauq, Taher Abbas, Ali Abbas and Hamid Zaman beat Liptons from Karachi comprising of M.A.Ansari, Sultan Siddiqui, Rashid Jafer, Abdul Khalique, Nasir Raza Khan and Ghulam Muhammad.
They beat them by 43 IMPs in a 64 board final (16x4) Carry Over of 16+14=30-4=26+37=63-20=43, and thus qualified to represent Pakistan in the 11th Bridge Olympiad in Maastricht.

Earlier in the semi-finals, Al Fateh had chosen the 4th qualifier Air Power also from Lahore comprising of Ihsan Qadir, Dr.Izzat Shah, Mohsin Chandna, Waheed Khan, Arif Malik, Omar Aslam against whom they had a carry over of 23 IMPs and beat them with a margin of 88 IMPs over 48 Boards (16x3).

In the other semi finals, Liptons upset the favorite Peek Freans who had Nisar Khan, Kemal Shoaib, Taher Masud, Javed Ahmed, Rashidul Ghazi and Parvez Mirza. They were blitzed in the very first segment by some out of the blue brilliant game bids (4 in a row) by Nasir & Khalique against Rashid & Parvez, which were not bid by Nisar and Kemal. This lead was enhanced further when in the second segment Nisar & Kemal were rested. However in the 3rd session we saw an excellent fight back by Nisar & Kemal, glimpsing the Nisar of 80's but it was not enough and they lost by 17.6 IMPs and were shocked and sadly out. Liptons had a carry over of 7.6+33=41.6+10=51.6-34=17.6.

In the Round Robin Stage 10 teams contested a single round robin of 20 board matches, which had 6 teams from Karachi along with 3 from Lahore and one from Islamabad.

Ladies:

Horizon comprising of Qudsia Dossa, Zeenat Azwer, Rubina Agha and Roshan Ara Bokhari defeated Destroyers from Lahore comprising of Talat Wajahat, Molly Wajahat, Elizabeth Naqvi and Najm Abid.

In the ladies there were two teams from Karachi and four from Lahore who also played a 20 Board round robin and a 16x4=64 board final.
